season 02 • episode 12

Destruction by Sound

plot
Professor Zeffer has invented a device which can transmit matter from one location to another using the sonar beam. To demonstrate this to a sceptical Haggerty, Raeburn sends Cassiopeia through the machine to Mars. When she returns to Space Headquarters, however, her father discovers that she can only speak backwards; the only word that sounds the same is “pop”. Dart suggests using the newly invented super ultrasonic gun to treat the problem, ultrasonic waves having been used in the past to treat certain brain disorders. The treatment is successful, and Cassie is cured. Irya visits Earth from Alpha Centauri and requests the help of Space Patrol to defeat an evil and extremely powerful brain which has taken over his home planet, Delta. He modifies Galasphere 347 to enable it to travel faster than light. When they arrive on Delta, Dart confuses the brain by targeting a super ultrasonic gun at its underground headquarters. This puts its robot servants and computers out of action, and allows the Deltans to destroy its base.

notes
Irya had previously appeared in Message From a Star.
Cassiopeia speaks several of her lines backwards in this episode:
“Oh, Pop!  Something terrible has happened.  I feel perfectly normal Pop, but I’m talking backwards!”
“I’m talking normally, but everything I say comes out backwards!”
“It’s awful not being able to talk.”
    “Pop, I’m sorry Pop.”
“I want you to do it!”
    “Aw, please Pop, please Pop!”
“I must say I’m getting rather nervous.”
    “No!”
    “Yes.”
