Brief Synopsis
Mistress Mary Lennox was selfish and spoilt and most unlike other children of her age. When her parents passed away she did not cry; she did not know how to cry. Leaving India, where she had been born and lived all her life, Mary was sent to stay with her hunchback uncle in Yorkshire, Lord Archibald Craven. And being a most disagreeable child, she hated it.
But with the aid of a curious robin she finds the way into a secret garden long since locked up at Lord Craven's orders. After tending to the garden a change comes over her palid yellow face and most disagreeable attitude. She meets and befriends a local boy, the talented animal charmer Dickon, and discovers her sickly cousin who has been kept hidden away from her. Between them, the three children work astonishing magic in themselves and those around them; lifting the spell from the mysterious Misselthwaite Manor.
