| The most prominent variations of Longenecker are
Longenecker, Longnecker, Langenecker, Langenegger, Longaker, Longacre. These folks came from the Switzerland area. About 1718, the English scribes transliterated the individuals from Canton Bern (Switzerland) from "Langeneggers" to Longenecker. Over time, people then changed the surname to the shortened form Longacre, Longaker, etc. In the 19th century people came over to the U.S. from 12-or-so different "Langenegg" hamlets in Switzerland, Austria, south Germany, and northern Italy, and they either kept the name or modified the name to Langenecker, Langacker, etc. About 1680, the Swedes came over and only royalty had a last name . Most likely one Swede had a farm on "long acre", and his son's surname changed to "Longacre." There are many people is the U.S. with the name Longacre. |
