Fire Station Visit this Friday

Dear Parents,

We had a great time at Upland Hills Farm last Thursday, in spite of the cold. Now we're off to the Fire Station! We can't wait to learn about fire safety from Lt. Mike and to explore a real fire engine! By the way, I'm still waiting for a few permission slips for the Fire Station visit. Please send them in by tomorrow.

This week is a very busy week for us. We're still enjoying our apple activities and we're busy making a book about our visit to the farm. We begin CogAt testing this week (see attached letter) and we'll review all that we've learned thus far in reading to help prepare us for our first reading assessment. (Don't panic parents; it sounds much worse than it is!)

Regarding homework, please resist the urge to do your child's homework for him or her. By all means assist your child, but encourage him/her to do the work by themselves, including handwriting.

A quick note regarding our class website: My home computer is in for repairs so updates to the website may be delayed. Thank you for your patience.

Well, October sure started out a lot colder than we expected! Please make sure your child has a jacket for outdoor recess. Also, please remember to pack a nutritious snack for your child.

Have a Great Week!

Ms. Kopilchack

Now, for a look at this week's activities:

Reading/Writing
This week we review the skills and reading strategies we've learned so far, as well as spelling and vocabulary words. I'm sending home a book bag which contains all the stories we've read and a list of words your child should know. Your child should be able to spell the spelling words and recognize the sight words. Please spend some time reading/reviewing with your child.

Sight words will be reinforced through a variety of fun Word Wall activities.

Phonics
We wrap up our review of initial consonant letters/sounds and will focus on medial sounds for the remainder of the week.

Math
We continue learning addition and addition strategies through hands-on activities. We are also learning our addition math facts through sums of 12.

Science
This wek we begin learning about animal habitats. We are continuing with our fall themes to include apples, the farm and fire safety.

Religion
This week we thank God for the special people in our lives.
