2nd Quarter Begins

Dear Parents,

It's the beginning of a new marking period. It's hard to believe that we're a quarter of the way through first grade!

Report cards will be sent home on Monday, November 3rd and conferences begin on Wednesday, November 5th. I look forward to meeting with you to discuss your child's progress. Please complete the attached questionnaire and return it by Friday, October 30th. The questionnaire will help me better prepare for our conference. Also attached is a note confirming our scheduled conference time.

The new quarter brings many additions to our first grade classroom. Our Centers activities become more "structured" and are designed to reinforce/assess your child's learning. Our computer projects will also support our curriculum. Beginning Friday, November 14th, we'll add Writer's Workshop to our schedule. The children will be learning about the writing process as well as the mechanics of writing. Mom volunteers will be coming in to help us edit and publish our work. We will begin by making class books and, eventually, individual books.

Parents, please continue to practice the wordbooks with your child. Several children are ready to move on to leveled readers as well as our long vowel wordbook.

Don't forget this Friday is our All Saints Day celebration. The children are asked to dress up like a Saint. We will attend Mass with our 8th Grade Buddies in the morning and enjoy a class celebration in the afternoon.

Have a great week!

Ms. Kopilchack

Now, for a look at this week's activities:

Reading/Writing
Our story this week is, Coco Can't Wait. In this story we will review concepts already learned. We will also learn about possessives and quotation marks.

We will be introduced to descriptive writing this week. The children will describe, in writing, their Halloween costumes and share them with the class. We'll try to "guess the costume" based on our descriptions.

Phonics
We continue with the short "a" sound and will learn how to blend consonant/short "a" sounds together.

We practice our Word Wall Words with a variety of activities and continue to use the wall in our writing.

Math
We continue to learn addition and addition strategies through hands-on activities. This week we'll learn about Turnaround Facts (4 + 6 = 10, 6 + 4 = 10), Ways to Name Numbers (6 + 5 = 11, 8 + 3 = 11, 7 + 4 = 11), and Adding Three numbers (3 + 3 + 2 = 8).

We are also learning our math facts without using manipulatives. You might want to purchase a set of addition flash cards to practice with your child at home.

Science
We wrap up our habitat studies this week and will continue with Fall/Halloween activities.

Religion
We will be learning about Saints all this week to help prepare us for All Saints Day.

Homework - Study spelling words. practice wordbooks, attached activities.
