Evaluation

How does one assess a student's level of understanding?  According to the text, "Understanding By Design,"  by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe, (1998) there are six facets of understanding: explanation (phenomena, facts, and data provided), interpretation (ideas and events revealed through images, anecdotes, analogies, and models), application (use and apply knowledge), perspective (see the big picture critically), empathy (find value in other's points of view), and self-knowledge (being aware of what is not understood) (pg. 44).  Because understanding is an ongoing process it is important that a continuum of assessment methods be applied throughout the learning process: informal checks for understanding, observation/dialogue, quiz/test, academic prompt, performance task/projects (pg 14).
