Welcome to Diana's Marathon Page!
Run 26.2 Miles---is she crazy?!?
Dear Friends and Marathon
Supporters:
Most of you are aware
that in March I completed my first marathon in Rome, Italy. My motivation
to undertake this goal was my two nephews who live with diabetes.
I am pleased to report that as a part of the Team Diabetes program,
I raised $7400 towards a cure for diabetes. This experience was so
rewarding and exhilarating, that I have committed to again raise money
for the ADA and train for another marathon. This time I will participate
in the Vancouver marathon May 2, 2004. If you have any interest in
joining me, please contact me soon so you can join the training!
Dustin and Brandon must
constantly monitor their blood sugar levels through finger pricks
on their tender 10 and 14 year old bodies. Their food intake must
be monitored constantly, and because their pancreases do not create
the necessary islets to break down sugar, they have insulin pumps
constantly inputting that substance. They will have to do this for
the rest of their lives, as there is currently no cure.
- Uncontrolled diabetes
leads to kidney failure, amputations, heart disease, strokes, blindness,
and death.
- Diabetes affects 17 million
Americans. 10% of these patients have a type-1, or insulin-dependent,
diagnosis. The other 90% have type-2, or adult-onset, diabetes.
- Diabetes is the sixth
leading cause of death by disease in the U.S. This means an average
of 21 people die every hour from diabetes-related complications
In addition to the physical
training to safely complete a marathon, I am committed to raising
another $3900 for the American Diabetes Association. The ADA mission
is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people
affected by the disease. I believe strongly that research is getting
closer to finding a cure for both types of diabetes, and urge you
to join me in support of that effort. To track my progress in fundraising
and/or training, check out www.geocities.com/dianar513/teamd.htm and
participate as actively as you want. I welcome you to donate, come
to training runs, invite others to donate, or simply "live vicariously"
through my experience. If you have questions, please call or email
me.
Peace and joy to you,
Diana
