Consolidated Fantasia Fair Diaries.

Happy New Year

December 27 th

I went to the uniTy meeting up in Springfield last night and we talked about copping with the holidays. Many of us don't have family near by or the families have estranged us. So it is very difficult not being able to visit their parents or their children. It can be a very lonely season for all of us. Even though I am not out to my family and friends, I still wonder what will happen when I eventually tell them.

Then afterwards some of us went over to a coffeehouse. It was the first time I could make it to the coffeehouse. All of the other times I had to work the next day but I have the week off between Christmas and New Years. I had a nice time at the coffeehouse, it was more of a relaxed atmosphere than the meetings. The meetings tend to get a little emotional at times.

Now to figure out what to do for New Years Eve.

December 12 th

Yesterday was the Twenty Clubs annual Christmas party. There were about twenty-five members there with friends and relatives. The food was good and I had nice time sitting around and talking to friend who I haven't seen in while. I made my Corn Pudding, which I got several complements for a number of people.

After the Twenty Clubs party I went over to the COS meeting and we had our Christmas party there. We had a low turn out mainly because of all the other Christmas parties that were being held for other organizations and businesses that weekend. But we still had about twelve or so members and spouses show up for the party.

December 12 th

Yesterday I went to the COS dinner at the Pond House Café in West Hartford. Since I am the program direct for COS I had a sign-up sheet, we had fifteen members and spouses sign up for the dinner. Then came the weather forecast and we ended up with only seven members and spouses showing up. But we did have a good time, so good as a matter of fact that the restaurant staff had to just about through us out in order to lock up for the night. We were just about the only ones in the restaurant, there were only two other tables occupied.

This brings up another topic, the television news. The weather forecast was for a mixture of rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow. The forecast was a bit iffy, they didn't quite know where the rain - freezing rain line would be. They were not forecasting a major storm just a storm, one or two inches of snow or a light coating of ice. But the way the news people handled it sounded like the storm of the century. They had flashing banners on the screen that say "Winter Storm Warning" with all types of sound effects. They have six reports out in field covering state, they were telling in views to stock up on food and they were warning people not to go out in the dangerous conditions.

What did we get, just what the weather forecasters said, about an inch of slush and the roads were only wet. So much for all of the hype.

December 10 th

Here is an interesting news article that I came across. Some of you may remember Caroline Cossey ( Tula ) efforts to try to get Great Britain to change her birth certificate. She took her case all the way to the European Court and lost.

Well the times they are a changing. "Transsexuals win right to marry"

December 8 th

This morning on the "Weekend Today" show they had a story about "A crossdressing man as a chaperoning for a fourth grade class in a Missouri school field-trip". The way the "Weekend Today" show presented the story it sounded like she just showed up at the bus crossdressed for the first time. But reading the article in the St Louise Post Dispatch indicates that she has been going to other school events and functions as a women for several years. That there was no problem with it until now.

The question arises does the right of an individual to be who they are exceed the rights of a parent. Does a parent have the right to discriminate? If the parent didn't want chaperones that were black or Asian would that be acceptable? Or what about if the chaperone had polio or MS, could the parent object and not let them chaperone their children.

Notice also in the article that it was not the children who objected, it was the parents. I guest that the children have better sense then the adults.

December 5 th

What is "Normal"? I just got finished reading Amy Bloom's book "Normal " in it she tries to answer that question in regards to transsexuals, crossdressers and intersexed persons. She explores gender and questions what really is normal.

This morning on the radio they were talking about Christmas in Florida as not being "normal", how can you have a Christmas tree decorated and sticking it on a beach while you are lying on the beach in a bikini? But when you stop and think about it you'll realized that it is normal for them. It is just that their prospective is different from ours here in Connecticut.

Who is a "normal" female or who is a "normal" male? Is a woman who likes to work construction and wears a T-shirts and jeans with short hair a normal female, where does she fall on the bell curve? Does it make any differences if you found out she is happily married with two children?

What about a man who is a ballet dancer, is he a normal male? Once again suppose he is a father and is married to a loving wife. What about a man who wears a dress or a women born in a male body? What about the intersexed person, with ambiguous genitals are they "normal"? If you ask them they would mostly likely say that they feel "normal".

What is "normal" in nature? Nature does not make mistakes and nature is never binary, it is only us humans that like to simplify nature and make it black or white, male or female. Can you imagine a black and white rainbow? Can you imagine if all the trees were the same height and their branches all looked the same. Or all of the clouds in the sky were all the same, what a boring world it would be. Look around you in nature, no two trees are alike, no two clouds are alike, look at all the colors in a rainbow,. Varity is what makes life so interesting. Varity is what makes life so beautiful. So celebrate our differences, don't despise it or reject it.

November 30 th

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. On Wednesday at the COS meeting, we showed the movie "Iron Ladies" which was about the Thailand National Volleyball team who won their national championship. The team was made up of transsexuals, gays and one straight man and was coached by a lesbian. It was ok, but you really had to follow the subtitles to understand it. We had only six members there, however it was a good turn-out considering that it was the evening before Thanksgiving and also we had about a foot of snow that day.

On Friday night I went up to Springfield with a friend to a get-together at a coffee shop that uniTy sponsored . There was about a dozen member there and was sat around and talked. We stayed for a little over an hour. It was the first time I was at the coffee shop, uniTy members usually go there after their regular Thursday night meeting, but that is a little to late for me having to normally get up and go to work the next day.

November 23 rd

I just got back from dinner at the Pond House, four of us went there after the Twenty Club meeting. As usual we had a good meal at the restaurant.

The meeting at the Twenty Club had about twenty-four members there and it was a typical Twenty Club meeting, very informal covering both transgender and non-transgender topics. Whatever anyone what to talk about. A few just stopped by to say hello and see what was happening, since they were in the area.

November 20 th

The "Day of Remembrance". I just got back from the vigil that was held in Hartford. I read the name of Ontwon Curtis, On September 13 th of this year she was murdered. She was shot several times in the chest at her home in Newport News, Virginia. Andrew Coleman has been arrested for her murder.

I had a very difficult time reading that statement out loud. It brings home the point that people will kill one another just because they are different, that they are just trying to be whom they are inside, to be themselves.

Last Wednesday, COS had a shopping trip to a clothing store in Hartford. I bought a black flower print sleeveless dress, a denim jacket, cotton turtleneck sweater and a long a-line wool plaid skirt all for fifty dollars.

On Friday it was off to Cape Cod again. I arrived at the Carpe Diem Guesthouse a little after one in the afternoon and the manager said that one of the COS members just left to go to the Lobster Pot for lunch, so I headed down there to have lunch with her.

After lunch I made the best of the weather, which was in the high fifties and sunny, and did some window-shopping. I didn't buy anything but, I walked on the beach and took some pictures.

By the time for supper arrived, there we four of us gals from COS. We went out with some friends of a friend of one of the girls from COS, her friend had four other of his friends with him. The nine of us went out to eat at Michael Shay's and then after dinner we went out to a couple of bars for a nightcap. By the time we called it an evening around midnight the rains had started.

It rained and rained and rained all day Saturday. At least it wasn't a hard rain just a light rain all day, but that didn't stop us from enjoying ourselves. For lunch three of us went to the Lobster Pot again and I had a bowl of lobster bisque and cup of hot tea.

For dinner the four of us went to Nappi's where we had another enjoyable dinner. Then we went to see the movie Sordid Lives with Olivia Newton-John and Delta Burke that was playing at the Whaler's Wharf Theater. After the movie was over we went to the Vixen's for a drink.

While we were in the theater it started to pour and pour and then it really started to come down. The storm became a full fledge Nor'easter, it made the one during Fantasia Fair seem tame. When we left the bar the wind was blowing and the rain was coming down horizontal. Over night the power flickered and the winds were gusting over fifty miles an hour. It was a real interesting night. Sunday morning it was still lightly raining and it drizzled all the way home.

One of our members was suppose to have come up Saturday afternoon but she never made it and we were worry that something might have happen to her and it did. She had car trouble on the way up, her car kept on stalling because of all the rain. The normal four-hour drive took over six hours. So she didn't get up there until after nine o'clock.

I had a good time at the meeting last night, we had around ten people show with two of them new faces. We didn't have any regular planed agenda so we sat around talking and socializing. It nice to sit back and kick off your shoes and relax. One of the discussion we had was on the positive aspects of crossdressing. I left at eleven, some of the members headed over to the Polo Club.

November 4 th

The Halloween meeting at COS was ok. We had about fifteen people show up. One of the members wore an outfit from the seventies, which was neat, I thought it should have one the contest.

Saturday, I went to the Hideaway Roadhouse restaurant for dinner with some friend from COS and uniTy. I wore my new blue dress that I bought in P'town. We had a nice dinner and then went down to the bar for an after dinner drink. Being Saturday I didn't have to worry about getting up early in the morning to go to work so we left around eleven-thirty.

Entering Provincetown Established 1686 SignAnother whole year has passed once again I am writing about Fantasia Fair. I fell in love with Fantasia Fair the very first time that I went. The town of Provincetown makes the fair, from its people to its location at the tip of Cape Cod. To walk the streets and visit the shops, to be out and about not cooped up in some hotel. To feel the wind, smell the ocean and yes even to dodge the rain drops makes you feel so much more alive.

Sunday October 21st

After driving for two and half-hours the Bourne's bridge was finally in sight, Cape Cod at last! But, it was still another one and a half-hour drive to reach Provincetown. I checked into the Carpe Diem guesthouse where I am staying and then I went down and registered for the fair.

Later on I went out to supper with some friends from COS ( Connecticut Outreach Society ), we went to Ciro and Sal's, a nice Italian restaurant. Then over to the Pier bar, a nightclub where a dance was being sponsored jointly by Fantasia Fair and Women's Week. There I meet some friends from uniTy who came down for Women's Week. I didn't stay to late it was a long day and also the music was for the young folk.

Monday October 22nd

The day started off with the Orientation breakfast, I took the rest of the morning off and went window shopping until lunch. At the breakfast the newbies were given information about the fair and Provincetown, also a police public affairs office gave a talk about that Provincetown was proud of it's zero tolerance on hate crimes, that your biggest worry is parking, which is strictly enforced.

After lunch, I went the lecture, as they call it "Plenary" about Crossdressing. One of the things that stood out to me is the "Crossdresser wear women clothes because they are women clothes and transsexuals wear women clothes because they are women." After the talk I went back to my room and read until supper.

Dinner was at the Universalist Unitarian Meeting hall and was followed by a movie "Myth of Father" about a son documentary on his father's transition and how it affected their family. After the movie some of us went up to the Vixen for a couple of drinks and to talk. I left a little after eleven.

Tuesday October 23rd

I took it easy in the morning and read. For lunch I went to the lecture "Can the Mind Be Inter-gendered?", it was an informative talk and I think that she made some very good points showing that it can be. One of the facts I mentioned was about DES being given to expectant mothers and how it affects the male fetus.

After lunch, I went to the seminar on "In Search of the Elusive Image" which was about writing poetry and I learned a few tips and techniques.

They had an awards dinner to honor some pioneers who lead the way for the rest of us. They gave awards to Virginia Prince and Merissa Lynn for their work over the decades. Afterwards, we went over to one of the B & B to sit around and talk. Most of those there all knew and worked with Virginia over the many years and they related many of their fond memories of her.

Once again I left around eleven and walk back to my B & B along the deserted streets in high heel all dressed to the nine from the Banquet dinner.

Wednesday October 24th

The day started off cold and rainy, but by the end of the day the sun managed to finally come out. In the morning I went to a seminar call "What Can Science Tell Us About Transgender Experience" it was very informative and from what she said re-enforced what I already believe, that it is not just one factor but a combination of both nature and nurture. That it is made up of a combination of genetics, prenatal environment and life experience.

After lunch another member of COS arrived. I went a discussion group on the aging transperson, yes I am getting up there in age where I'm starting to look towards retirement. On the way back from the meeting I saw a car of a friend that I knew since high school parked next to the town hall. When I saw them this summer they mentioned that they were going up to Wellfleet this week. Now when I saw their car I thought "This could be Very Interesting".

This is the Fashion Show night at the fair. Before the show we went dinner at the Lobster Pot and once again they had excellent food. The two events that really bring out the locals are the fashion show and the follies. Tonight's fashion show was just as good as ever. I always enjoy watching new timers watch the show. After the show we just headed back to the B & B and turned in, I was beat it was a long and busy day.

Thursday October 25th

Another great day both weather wise and events, I went to luncheon plenary and read some of my poems. I heard some favorable comments from the audience afterwards. Then I went shopping for a dress for the COS Halloween party and for the following Saturday night's dinner that some of us are going to.

For dinner we all went to the Martin house for a very nice dinner and that was follower by a round of house parties. I didn't get back to the B & B until after one o'clock. But the parties were really worth it, we had some great discussions on transgenderism.

Friday October 26th

Another nice day, I started off the day with a seminar, had lunch and listened to a talk about Provincetown and what it is like to live here year round. A person gave the talk from town's Board of Director's and also a brief sidebar by the Chief of Police, who read the town's anti-hate crime ordnance. However, after he read it, I noticed that it didn't said anything about "Gender". Maybe we can get it included into the ordnance. After the talk I went back to my room and read for while, then took a nap in preparation for the follies.

We all ate dinner at the Crown and Anchor and then went around to the back of the restaurant for the follies. Once again the Fantasia Fair Follies lived up to it's reputation it was excellent. The follies are open to the public and the town's folk know that they are going to get their money's worth. The hall was packed and the show lasted about two and half-hours and we got out around ten thirty. Some went out and partied, but a couple of others and myself from the B & B went back to it and we sat around drinking some wine and talking until after midnight.

Saturday October 27th

The gale warnings were out at the Coast Guard station, we had a full-blown Nor'easter. The rain was coming down all day and the wind turned many umbrellas inside out. I decided to forgo the morning and went to lunch at the Crown and Anchor then head back to my room for some dry clothes. Then back to the Crown and Anchor at two-thirty for the talk on "Lost In The Pink Fog" which was about going home after the fair and being depressed or making rash decisions about transitioning. After the talk it was a wet and windy trip back to the B & B, take a short nap and get ready for the Awards Banquet Dinner that was being held at Michael Shay's. One of our COS sisters got the "Most Helpful" award.

Once the dinner broke up some of us headed over to the Vixen bar for drinks. While we were there we did some outreach, we talked to some women who just couldn't understand why we would what to dress as women. One in the morning we headed over to Roomers and I stayed until two, when the clocks were set back one hour to Standard time.

Sunday October 28th

Too bad my body didn't realize that we are on Standard time when I woke up this morning. We all went to the breakfast at the breakfast at Michael Shay's and said our good-byes. I headed for home around eleven, got home a little after three, and took a lone nap. Until next year.

October 20 th

Off to Fanatsa Fair, see you all there.

October 13 th

Yesterday I went to the Twenty Club meeting in the afternoon and they had around fifteen members show up for the meeting. We got into a discussion about what the state of Connecticut requires to change your birth certificate. Are they imposing more bureaucratic restraints than the law requires making it harder to change your birth certificate.

After the meeting I invited some friends over for pizza before we went to the COS meeting. At the COS meeting we had a beauty consultant talk about the cosmetic line that she represents. We had also about fifteen members' show for the meeting.

But the best day of the week was Wednesday, eight of us when out to the same restaurant in Merrow CT that we went to in September. We had a very good time, after dinner we went down to the bar and had a drink. I didn't get home until one o'clock in the morning and the next morning, I did something that I rarely do, called in sick to work. Five o'clock came very early and I just looked at the alarm clock and turned it off. Also Thursday night I didn't feel like going to the uniTy meeting.

October 6 th

Went up to the Sunshine Club's 10th Anniversary Dinner last night, I rode road up with two COS members. The Sunshine Club had a good turn out for the dinner and there were two other COS members and also there were a number of uniTy members who went to the dinner. It was a buffet dinner and they had a DJ for dancing. I think that it is great that we have events like this for the community, a lot of us never get out and are able to go out in their desired gender. So this gives them a chance to dress-up and go out someplace fancy.

We left a little after eleven and I didn't get home until around one in the morning. I glad I didn't drive because I managed to sleep so on the way back.

September 29 th

Had a very busy week, COS Wednesday night, uniTy Thursday night and on Friday morning I had my first "Outreach" at a local college. At the COS meeting we had a vendor from the area come in and talk about her store. We had a very good turn out for the meeting with some twenty or so members and guests. I didn't get home until after eleven-thirty.

At the uniTy meeting we got into a discussion about "do we owe anything to our community after we transition"? We take advantage of support groups while we prepare for our transition and then walk away from the groups afterwards. Should those who have progress come back to the support groups and help those of us that are still struggling with our identity?

But the best day was Friday when I went on the "Outreach". It was for a class in Human Sexuality, as I mentioned, at a local college. We gave them a brief biography of ourselves and then answered questions from the students. They asked very thoughtful and interesting questions. Through these encounters I feel that we can increase awareness of the Transgender community and give them a face and a person that they can learn from, not just from a book. It makes the whole exercise personal.

September 21 st

Went to the Hartford Pride today and manned the COS booth today with two other members. The event had a good turn out and the weather was beautiful. There were two transgender booths there, COS and uniTy. So out of the thousand or so people that were there I estimate fifty or sixty transgender were there.

There was a little bit of controversy this year. It seems that in all the years in the past our illustrious Governor Roland never issued a proclamation, but this year he did. However, it only included gays, lesbians, not bisexuals and transgender. There was a big debate whether or not to read the proclamation. In the end they did not read it. Instead they allowed statement to be read from the GLBT groups.

The bisexual group that was next to us tried to get us to go up with her on stage to read a speech, I finally agreed to go up as an individual, not as a representative of COS. As we were standing on the stage as she read the speech in front of several of hundred of people, I noticed off in one corner a local news crew filming us. I sure hope it is not on this evening news at ten.

One of the gals from COS was "Outed" that way, she was talking to a politician at the Pride when a newspaper photographer took her picture. Next Monday morning at work they looking the picture and her, seeing the resemblance. That is always the risk you take when you go to public events.

Update: Yes I did make the ten o'clock news. I don't think I was recognizable, you could only see my profile. I was only on there for about twenty to thirty second so I sure hope no one could recognize me.

September 15 th

Had a great time yesterday. Twenty Club had a very low turn out, I think once again that it is the fact that they meet on Saturday afternoon. It was a nice day, today is going to be rainy so many members were most likely doing thing out before the rain begins. Also the Big E ( Eastern States Exposition, it is a big fair for all of the New England states and New York that is held in Springfield each year.) is on this weekend. So we ended up just sitting around and talking.

At the COS meeting we had a large turn out, we had about twenty-five people there. We also had three guests show up for their first time, for two of them this was the first time that they have ever been outside of their house. We all remember our first time and how difficult it was. Also we had the president of the Sunshine Club stop by for a visit and to tell us about the dinner that they are having on October 5 in Hadley, MA.

The meeting was a pot-luck supper and there was a lot of food, I made me Chicken Casserole ( see my recipes page ) and they finished the whole dish. It was nice to sit around and renewing acquaintances from over the summer.

This coming week is going to be busy, Tuesday is the COS board meeting and on Saturday is Hartford PRIDE Day and I will be at the COS booth for that event.

September 13 th

Last night meeting at uniTy was a very emotional, it was one of those time that brings together the community. Where you know that we are all one family.

Enough said.

September 6 th

A great night to be had by all.

Sept 3 rd

This is the start of my third year as a member of COS. Looking back on those years to when I made that long climb up the stairs to the meeting hall lead to a major change in my life.

It all started in the spring of '99 when I had a problem with my heart. Between the time that I had called for ambulance and when they arrived, I franticly changed from Diana back into my male persona.

As I was laying in the emergency room that night I decided that I couldn't hide any more that I had to begin to live my life. It was then that I knew I had to come out of the closet. So began my journey.

Since then I have become a member of the board of directors of COS, became their webmistess, gone to two Fantasia Fairs, two First Events and two COS Banquets. I have gone to the Hartford Pride event and sat at the COS booth there. Also I have gone to the "Children for the Shadows" conference and manned the COS table and taken part in a group discussion at the conference. In addition I have gone to several dinners at the Pond House Café in West Hartford. I have joined the "Twenty Club". I have had laser hair removal on my arms. There will be many more "Firsts" in the years to come, for the first time in my life I feel that I can now be myself.

Aug 25th

This was a busy week for me. Tuesday night the COS board meeting, on Thursdays I went to the Unity meeting in Springfield and on Saturday I went to the Twenty Club meeting.

At the COS board meeting we had a long meeting getting ready for the start of the new fall season. We are trying to line a meeting at one of the local boutique. Also see about getting a guest speaker for one of our meetings this fall. We also talked about having a table at the Hartford Pride festival on September 21. This year because of budget cuts they are not going to have a parade and are having a rally instead at Bushnell Park

On Thursday night I went to the uniTy meeting in Springfield MA. they had a very good turn out for that meeting about twenty to twenty-five people showed up. The topic of the night was passing. Once again that's a long drive back and forth to that meeting.

For the fall semester I have signed up for a class in PERL programming at a local community college. The classes are on Thursday's night so that is going to cut into going to the uniTy meetings and also one of the classes is during Fantasia Fair so I will have to miss that class. Hopefully the class won't be canceled this time, it's the forth time that I signed up for the class. Each time it was canceled because of lack of enrollment, I guest people are lazy and think programming is too hard.

Saturday's Twenty Club meeting had a low turn out for it, I think it is because it is on a Saturday afternoon and members have a lot to do during the summer months. I only went because it was raining and also because I haven't been in a while.

Aug 18th

It has been a while since my last entry, I haven't been doing much, went up to the cottage for a long weekend with some friends. Not much else.

However I have had an allergic reaction to my medication that I have been taking, Atenolol. I broke out in hives around the middle of July and it wasn't until around the first of August that we figured out what was causing the hives. Even after stopping taking the drug for two weeks now I still am breaking out with some hives. Although, the number of hives have decreased by seventy or eighty percent I still am breaking out with about a dozen hives a day. Let me tell you itching can drive you crazy, I just hope that they will clear up shortly, it sure takes all the fun out of doing anything.

July 29th

The Twenty Club had their annual picnic at the Stratton Brook state park in Simsbury on Saturday, July 27. The day started out cloudy but latter on in the day the sun started to peek out from behind the clouds. There were about eighteen to twenty people who were there, of which five or six were COS members. When I arrived at noon and there was only one other person at the pavilion. Others arriving, one or two at a time bring their food. The park wasn't crowded, we just about had the pavilion side of the pond all to ourselves, with only an occasional fisherman passing by.

During the day I played some games of backgammon, won a few and lost a few. While others were playing cards or they sat around talking. The food was plentiful and it was nice lazy day to sit around and talk in the park.

During the week I sent in my deposits for Fantasia Fair and to Carpe Diem Guesthouse. I am looking forward to going to the fair this October, we will be having about six or seven COS members going up to the fair this year with four of us staying at the Carpe Diem. Party Time! The only draw back is that the fair is one week later due to the fact Columbus Day is late this year.

Also, I am setting up a COS trip to Provincetown the weekend of the 15th of November. I took a poll in our newsletter and I had eight members who said that they were interested in going. So I have to make the plans for that. I have my fingers crossed that the weather will be good.

July 12th

Over the Fourth of July weekend I went up to the family cottage in New Hampshire and stayed until Monday.

A friend from COS came up on Friday and we had a good time hanging out at the cottage. On Sunday smoke from a forest fire in Canada drifted down, you could smell the smoke from the fires 800 miles away. The sun had a weird yellowest-orange cast to it and the sky was greenest-yellow. Just like something out of the Twilight Zone. We also went out to eat on Sunday night, she went en-femme and I in boy mode. Did that feel funny, that I had to play the gentleman, hold the door and all that stuff. She pasted very well, I don't think anybody figured it out. But, she thought otherwise and was very nervous.

On the way back home I stopped to get gas in town and they had a Pride Day celebration poster on the wall. I joked to her about it, was it a Gay Pride celebration. What would happen if we showed up and it was something different, like for their football team? When I got home I checked it out on the Internet, it turns out that it was a Pride in the town day celebration.

Earlier in the day I got into my bathing suit, thinking the coast was clear. I laid down in the back of our boat, out of sight. Just then a neighbor came out and sat on his deck. TRAPPED. My friend went up to the cottage and got me some other clothes and I stayed out of sight as she drove around in the boat while I changed. I don't know if he saw me or not. Did he just come out to sit on the deck or did he just come out to investigate what he thought he saw? Or possibly he just wanted to check her out.

Last night ( Thursday ) I went up to the Unity meeting up in Springfield and the topic at the meeting was passing and being read. A lot of interesting view points, some who think it does us good to be read and let the people know that we exist. And others, with whom the last thing that they want to have happen is to be read.
