| You May be a diabetic Most people do not know if they are diabetic. Tho their bodies may tell them time and time again that they are, many times doctors don't get the idea that there is something wrong. Blood tests may show elevated glucose, but its often attributed to something else. But at no time should a glucose reading be ignored. any time its above 200, it should be a warning sign. but there are many key signs and symptoms that you could be a diabetic and even you and your doctor may not pick up on it. One more note however, If you know someone who has a glucometer, ask them to do a finger poke. They will be more than happy that you asked them, and second if your reading is high (above 120-140 after eating or drinking something sweet and above 120 on an empty stomach), they will be the first to talk to you about it, and all the options and they will be more than happy to be your sweet buddy. The most commonly thought of and learned signs of diabetes are of course these: Unquenchable Thirst. The person is always thirsty. They would drink the ocean if it wasn't salty. Hunger. They are hungry. Not just an "I could use something", but a deep down hunger. Frequent urination. As often as they are hungry and as much as they drink, they are always in the bathroom. OK got the picture so far.... it gets better. Weight Loss. not just a five pound weight loss..... but a massive weight loss, or a weight loss of five pounds or more in a very short period of time. So lets say that dress you have been eyeing only come is a size you wish you were. but now its too big? Wounds that won't heal. Like that paper cut, or kitchen cut that you can't remember when you got it, but it's still with you? Humnnnnnnn Sleepiness. Ok that nap you took, was it after you ate? Are you sleepy all the time? Nausea. It may not be morning sickness.Or just a stomach ache. Family tree. Your family tree may have its roots planted with diabetes. Tingling or numbness in hands or feet blurry vision, or color recognition problems funny taste in your mouth bleeding gums tho many people think they have brushed too hard, does it happen frequently? Always hot. Yes your temperature is a key factor. Always hot means your body is burning. Mood swings, Yep its not always PMS. Too much sugar in your blood stream makes you angry. Just the same way as too much adrenalin. Sense a connection. If someone tells you, "gee you drink and pee like a diabetic". Do not just put it off to something else. |

| There is, out there, a multitude of myth information about diabetes. As with any real information, the common mythology often times is one that has to be debunked. Here we will have some fun reading, and make you, the diabetic, or prospective diabetic more aware. "Just stay away from sugar and you'll be fine." Ok this one has been around longer than I even know. It was a common belief that sugar was the culprit. So the candy companies came out with sugar free stuff. A lot of well meaning neighbors will no doubt give you this stuff. It's actually for those who are counting calories for weight loss. But for those of us who are diabetic, carb counting, each one of those innocent beckoning little pieces of candy have as much potential and carb count as a donut. You're too young for Adult onset. Many people still think that adult onset is for those above 65. In truth anyone at any age can get adult onset. All it means is that you have type 2 and that you have some insulin.Just nod your head, and move on. You can't eat that. Most well meaning people don't have a clue as to what they can and can't eat. Let alone what your diet is supposed to be. Diabetics have to heat a well balanced full diet. That means meat and starches. At a salad bar, you may see many people chowing down on all that leafy stuff, but diabetics know that a good portion of meat and a starch along with a salad will keep their numbers low, and will be staisfied. Diabetics are often the brunt of well meaning people. Its just that they have heard from years that sugar is what's the matter, or a vegetarian diet is best. In truth, when we encounter these people they do not want to understand. They are comfortable in their mis-information. As is my husbands wonderful ways, just nod, try to enlighten, and sit there and enjoy your slice of pie.( remember you can literally have your cake and eat it too...even a diabetic.) |
