Dublin Historic Neighborhood Association Meeting
20 May 2006, 2:00 PM  Laurens County Public Library

(Continued from Previous Page)
The members discussed the continued operation of the Towing/Wrecker business on the corner of Duncan and Highland in our residential neighborhood. Ms. Tina Ivey expressed her concern about the issue. The property is zoned R-2 Residential. Over the last year, many residents of our neighborhood and our association have called and written the City Government urging the city to take effective action to enforce city zoning ordinances.  Towed vehicles and large tow trucks have been parked on the property and on the streets restricting traffic flow.  Members said that they have observed up to twelve vehicles parked on the property. When contacted, the City Manager said that the there is no ordinance which limits the number of vehicles that can be parked on residential property.  The members agreed that a wrecker/towing service is a highway-oriented business that should not be operated in a neighborhood that is zoned residential.  The trucks rumble through the neighborhood at all hoursday and night.  Several houses are for sale near the intersection and the wrecker/towing situation will almost certainly reduce the value of those and other properties in the neighborhood. Melanie and Rick Gunn recommended that we take this issue before the City Council since the owner appears to not care about the effect of his activities on the neighborhood.  Tina Ivey and Allan Tindol agreed to join Melanie and Rick Gunn to represent the association before the city council on this issue. Robert Bass and others expressed their concerns about the heavy traffic on Coney and Elm Streets.  Large trucks are a problem. Traffic accidents occur quite often. The members agreed with Melanie Gunn that neighborhood children are in danger of being hit by speeding vehicles.  Perhaps 4-way stops or traffic bumps would help.  Kelly Canady suggested that we obtain accident data from the Georgia Department of Transportation to bolster our case before we contact the city government.

Members expressed concern that realtors are promoting the house on North Street as a nursery/daycare center even though that non-conforming property has reverted back to R-2 Residential since no daycare has operated in that location for over twelve months.

Based on her personal experience, Ms. Jane Shoe cautioned residents to make sure that their pest control company conducts a proper inspection of their homes, especially if you use the Sentricon termite control system.

There was no more business.  President Harold Cline adjourned the meeting at 3:00 PM.
