Dublin Historic Neighborhood Association Meeting
20 May 2006, 2:00 PM
Laurens County Public Library

President Harold Cline convened the meeting and welcomed the members and first time participants. The meeting was scheduled on Saturday afternoon to accommodate our more senior neighbors and others could not attend a meeting during the week or at night. The president stated that the purpose of our association was to maintain and enhance our historic, residential neighborhood.  Ms. Mary Jo Nemzek modeled our new bright yellow DHNA T-Shirt with our name and logo on it.  Melanie Gunn, Larry Crouch and Kendel Browning designed the t-shirt.  The t-shirts are $15.00 each and may be purchased at Print, Stitches, and Etc. on Academy Avenue.

We congratulate Ms. Mary Ussery who received the Yard of the Season Award from the Keep Dublin/Laurens Beautiful Association.

We thank Ms. Jane Shoe for allowing us to feature a picture of her home on our website. Other neighbors who would like a photo of their home included on our gallery of Images of Our Neighborhood should let us know. We hope to expand the gallery to display more of our beautiful homes and neighborhood.

Melanie Moore Yates outlined her role in the national campaign to educate people about M.S.  She encouraged people to seek early diagnosis. Information and pictures of the Yates and others in the campaign may be found at www.imageofms.com.

Harold Cline reminded the members that the association is creating a list of abandoned vehicles, rotten and diseased trees and overgrown sidewalks in the neighborhood to submit to the city government.  The City government is responsible for dealing with abandoned vehicles, removing rotten trees on city right of way and maintaining public sidewalks.

A request was sent to the Mayor and City Manager asking that the city government establish an amnesty period for turning in old discarded tires without penalty. There are many old tires in our neighborhood and around our city. Old tires are unsightly and are a health hazard.  Mosquitoes breed and carry the West Nile Virus. Amnesty would permit Dubliners to both beautify our neighborhoods and remove a health hazard. All service organizations could participate.  Lynn and Melanie Yates volunteered their truck for this purpose.

Rebecca Cline noted that the city sanitation department does not pick up old tires. The sanitation crews should place a sticker on old tires at the curb informing residents of this fact instead of letting the tires rest on the curb for months.  Members felt that since the tires are a health hazard the city should pick them up and dispose of them.

Members noted that some Dubliners are not removing city trash carts from the curb after pick up.  Sitting at the curb week after week, the carts are unattractive. We recognize that a few residents are physically unable to roll the carts back and forth from the curb. Ms. Rose Pierce said that those residents may contact the city and receive special permission to leave carts at the curb.  We will check to see if there is a penalty for leaving trash carts at the curb without permission.

The members authorized the president by a unanimous vote to commend several persons for their work to improve the appearance of houses in our neighborhood.  The president will write a letter to the editor commending Ms. Jennifer Carter, Mr. Gil Gillis and Mr. Louie Curry for renovation of specific homes. Copies of the letter will be sent to the Chamber of Commerce and the City Council.

Ms. Rose Pierce expressed her concern about the neglected brick house at the corner of Highland Avenue and North Calhoun Street. Members discussed ways to solve the problem. Melanie and Lynn Yates agreed contact Jennifer Carter to see if she could purchase and renovate the house.
