The following is on the Historical Marker in Old D'Hanis located in front of the Saint Dominic Church.

The congregation was founded in 1847 with the founding of the D'Hanis Colony by Settlers from Alsace, France.  In 1853 when the town became a mission parish, a limestone church was built, using timbers hauled by ox-wagon from Medina River. Sandstone extensions were built in 1868 upon the arrivial of the first resident pastor. But the Church was abandoned after 1914 when a new church was built in "New D'Hanis". The Cemetery Dating from the burial of a child in 1847 was used until 1893 when a new cemetery was started following the Diphtheria Epidemic.
