Given the landlocked character and geography of the country, the Great King Prithvi Narayan Shah had said that Nepal is a yam between two boulders. The country lies between China in the north and India in east, west and south. Nepal maintains balanced and stable relationship with both neighbors.

Ever since its membership of the United Nations on December 14, 1955, Nepal has always worked and advocated for a peaceful international order. Nepal's contribution to the UN peacekeeping operations has been commended by the world community. It supports disarmament and arms control.

Nepal has worked closely with the Group of 77 and has always highlighted the special nature of problems faced by least developed countries and land-locked developing countries. Nepal has been advocating for reform, restructure, revitalization and more democratization of the United Nations. It is in favor of the limited expansion of the UN Security Council for the better geographical representation in the United Nations in view of the unprecedented growth in membership of the United Nations during the last few years and the political changes that took place in world in 1990s.

Nepal has served twice as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council between 1969- 1970 and 1988-1989 and in the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in 1980-1982. Nepal is serving another term of three years as one of the 54 members of ECOSOC beginning form 2001 until 2003. The country also became member of the Commission on Social Development between 1996 and 1998 and member of the Commission on Human Rights between 1998 and 2000. Both the Commissions are functional bodies of the ECOSOC. It had also served as vice-chairman to the Special Committee against Apartheid.

Nepal hosts regional offices of UNICEF and ITU, besides UN Regional Center for Peace and Disarmament for Asia and the Pacific.

Nepal is an active member of Non-aligned Movement and Group of 77. Nepal has always pleaded for just and equitable world order and condemned colonialism, imperialism and apartheid.

In the region, Nepal is one of the founding members of the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC), which was established in 1985. SAARC headquarters is in Kathmandu.
