Our DGSP Symbol
...a symbol of our call to be "fishers of men"...
We are adopting the <>< symbol, a long-honored symbol of Christianity, as our official DGSP symbol! In this article, I have attempted to give some of the history of the <>< and why we have chosen it for DGSP. ~Heather, co-editor
The Christian fish symbol (<><) is often called by its Greek name, ichthys, the Greek word for "fish". As early as the first century, Christians developed an acrostic from this word: Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter (Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior). Why did early Christians use this word? For one thing, it is significant because Christ multiplied the five loaves and two fish in the feeding of the 5,000. In Matthew 4:19, Christ also says to Peter and Andrew, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men."
While the <>< has been criticized because it was used as a pagan symbol of fertility, this allowed early persecuted Christians in Rome to use it as their secret symbol without attracting suspicion. According to one ancient story, when a Christian met a stranger in the road, the Christian sometimes drew one arc of the simple fish outline in the dirt. If the stranger drew the other arc, both believers knew they were in good company.
As our new magazine symbol, the <>< can symbolize for us our call to follow Christ and lead people to Him. It should also remind us of how much others have suffered for their faith, and of our need to follow Christ at all costs. The prayer of Amanda and I is that through the Dwelling in God’s Secret Place magazine, you will be challenged to grow in your faith and be a "fisher of men" for Him! <><
