DFW HCV

Welcome to the new website for the DFW Liver Disease Support Group!  All those words were just too long, so I selected DFWHCV as our url cuz it's easier to remember.  The DFW Liver Disease Support Group has grown to encompass other chronic illnesses such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, etc. because these are problems we all share.

This is where I try to keep track of the HCV happenings in our area.  We have several great support groups that meet live monthly and online groups and chat rooms and I wanted to offer a place to combine as much of that great info as I can.

Check out Meetup.com for other local Hep C groups. I'll try to update soon with some more links. Write me if you have any questions or comments :).

Have time to help out?  Want space on our website?  Or want to comment or just have someone to talk to about HCV?

What is hepatitis C?

A virus that attacks the liver.

Is hepatitis C contagious?

HCV can only be passed by blood.

What are the symptoms of HCV?

Symptoms of HCV can vary.  The most common symptoms are flu-like - low grade fever, fatigue, malaise, etc.  Not everyone has symptoms of Hep C, which is why it's also called THE SILENT KILLER.

The longer a person has HCV, the more severe the symptoms may become or they may disappear entirely.  Some long term symptoms of HCV are chronic fatigue, depression, fibromyalgia, bowel problems, insomnia, etc.

How is the virus spread?

The virus can be spread by:

  • Sharing personal care items such as razors, toothbrushes, fingernail files/clippers, pierced earrings.
  • Tattoo equipment and ink.
  • May be spread sexually, but there's been no absolute evidence of it yet.
  • Sharing drug paraphernalia of any kind (cooker, cotton, fit, tie) including water, utensils used to snort or sniff drugs, etc.
  • Thru any blood products made from HCV tainted blood, like the rho gam shots of the 70's, vaccinations, air guns, unsterilized equipment, blood transfusions, etc.
