Can a better World War II film be made than this? Saving Private Ryan is quite simply the most outstanding film of the 1990s since Schindler's List. Forget about Martin Scorsese or Woody Allen, Steven Spielberg in just 20 minutes of film making has eclipsed what any og them have put on film. If ever you wanted prrof that there is a special place for the movie theatre and the cinematic film in an age of insttant access television, then this film is it. Not since Apocalypse Now have we witnessed such an astonishing use of sound in a motion picture. Not since Schindler's list have we appreciated the full horror of such a dark age in history, and not since Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life" have we fully realised the extent to which one man can make a difference. The sacrifice men my age made and the contribution Spielberg had made in highlighting this is the most powerful message against war and against the degredation of humanity than any previous war film I have seen (sorry Oliver Stone).

The long wait for those who have been anticipating the release of this film. In Australia we have to wait at least three months. However, I cannot believe how good the reviews coming out of the USA are. I try not to read all of them in full because some of them contain spoilers, but from the first and last paragraphs you can tell that this film will be the favourite of the 1999 oscars (and it's only July!). Even the negative reviews are positive. They focus on Spielberg's brilliant 'manipulation', which they find offensive. And yet again, they accuse him of being a try-hard. I mean, I've done my research on this director and I can write a negative review of his film, photocopy it and change the title of the film. The criticisms are always the same and predictable. Needless to say, every respectable publication has agreed that this is if not the greatest WWII film ever, up there with the best. I will keep this page updated with Box Office Figures. Meanwhile, I see no need to add stuf when the best saving private ryan page includes heaps of reviews and daily updates. I'll put a link in below.
