City Breaks Its Own French Fry Record

Updated 7:37 AM ET September 8, 2000
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (Reuters) - Residents of this potato-growing mecca cooked and devoured 3,960 pounds -- or about 12,000 servings -- of french fries on Thursday, breaking their own world record for cooking french fries, set annually for the past decade.

A downtown park was the site for the spud-fest, where organizers used a specially designed vat filled with 150 gallons of hot oil with a conveyor running through it to fry the record amount of french fries, donated by a local potato processor.

To help down the fries, organizers set out 50 gallons of ketchup, 25 pounds of salt and 15,000 napkins.

The celebration highlighted the weeklong potato harvest festival in the Red River valley of North Dakota, one of the top spud-producing regions in the United States.

================================================================

Sep 2, 2000 - Got letters from Clinton (Disco Daddy) Lynch and Norm Olsen. Covey also forwarded news that he'd talked to Amaral and will be getting more info from him in the near future. Special thanks to Lance Christian for this latest batch of finds. A couple more bio's will be posted this weekend, and further roster corrections and additions made.

Aug 20, 2000 - Got letters from Gary Bridget and John Pugrud! A couple more bio's posted, some more roster corrections and additions added, and several new pictures scanned.

Aug 9, 2000 - Dave Miles and Kurt Miller have obviously cornered the Ginkoba market, because their memories are dragging up names long forgotten here. Paul ("We're on a mission from God") Covey is zeroing in on at least eight more comrades at this moment. The message board has been installed, so has a countdown timer. I've put a few more pictures up, and some trivia stuff from around that time.

Aug 6, 2000 - We're on a roll. Paul has tracked down several people, and so far everyone seems enthusiastic about the idea. Very preliminary ideas/plans are being talked about and will be put here when something a little more firm is available.

PLEASE HELP US OUT WITH THE ROSTER!!!
