Peruvian “Holy Week”

The religious Festivity of the Holy Week takes place with a lot of devotion in different cities and towns all over the country:

The most famous of the celebrations is the one that is carried out in Ayacucho, the city of the 33 Churches where it is represented the passion and death of Jesus Christ from the victorious entrance to Jerusalem, the trial, the Calvary, the crucifixion and later resurrection that will be represented amid a lot of candles on Easter Sunday.

The Holy Week  begins in Cajamarca with its imposing Palm Sunday. Dressed with squares, mirrors and palm branches lower from the different towns bordering big crossings, those which after resting in the houses of the stewards, enter to the city surrounding the procession of the Lord that advances mounted in she-ass and followed by their apostles while the faithful ones sing sacred hymns in Quechua. (the native language)

In Cusco, the wonderful Taitacha of the Earthquakes comes out in procession on  Monday, On  Thursday the families get ready for  “twelve dishes” with tamales, chairo, chuñokola, pig with good grass, roasted beef, tongue with tomato sauce, sweet turnovers and other marvels.

At night of the same Thursday the visit to the different churches remembers the stations of the "via crucis". On Holy Friday, The Lord of the Sacred Sepulcher, and  the mourning Virgin leaves the Church of La Merced in procession around the Main Square of the city of the Incas.
