What: As a general rule, I attempt to look a Pantera over with an eye towards
spotting both strong points and faults which might not be immediately obvious to
the inexperienced observer. I attempt to evaluate each of the major components
and subsystems for proper function, and also inspect the areas on the car that
are most prone to rust for evidence of decay. Note that just because I
report some rust in certain areas, that does not necessarily mean that there isn't
more rust hiding elsewhere! Where there's smoke, there's fire....
I also drive the car and compare its driving characteristics with those of
the hundreds of other Panteras I have driven.
Given the limitations of time and facilities, there is only so much that can
be achieved in a one- or two-hour inspection, and I can make no sure-fire
guarantees as to the absolute accuracy of my assessments. I view my job as simply
'screening' potential candidates, pointing out both strong and weak areas,
but ultimately it is up to the buyer to evaluate the car and come to his or her
own conclusions. |
