The following scenes are taken from my memory and from recaps of episodes, they may not be completly accurate, but the important stuff is there. (Trust me) As I get these DVD's the story will become more accurate. If anyone has better knowledge and wants to rewrite or add or correct something feel free to E-mail me.

 

 

 

Benji

 Steve and Kayla honeymooned in the Orient. While seeing the sights one day at a monestary they found a little deaf boy, Benji. They searched for his parents and contacted the US Embassy. When they couldn't find his parents the Embassy told Steve and Kayla they could take Benji back to Salem with them while they searched for his parents.
Once everyone was in Salem Benji missed his mother. Kayla had started feeling strong parental feelings for Benji so when they recieved a visitor one day saying they'd found his mother, Kayla was heartbroken.
They met the mother the next day, but Benji told Steve and Kayla this woman was not his mother. Kayla talked to her in sign and the woman didn't understand her. It was obvious this was not Benji's mother. They took him back to the loft with them.
This woman was an actress hired by Benji's real mother, who was in danger by Benji's father and didn't want to leave her hotel. She wanted to get Benji and bring him home with her. She was angry that Steve and Kayla discovered this wasn't Benji's mother and tried to find another way to get him.
Meanwhile while at a visit to see Roman Benji saw a composite sketch hung on the wall of Roman's office. He recognized the man in the picture and took it. The next day Kayla took Benji to the park and Benji saw his grandpa, dressed in a clown costume. He told Benji that he loved him but he couldn't take him home just yet.
Kayla had decided she wanted to start the adoption procedures for Benji, Steve was dead set against it. He said a boy needed his mother and until they found out what happened to Benji's mother they couldn't even explore the idea of adoption. Then Kayla got a phone call. "This is Benji's mother. I want Benji."
Kayla and Steve met with the woman the next day. Her name was Ellen Hawk. She seemed legitimate but she wouldn't tell Steve and Kayla why she'd left Benji. They could tell she was keeping something from them. Until they found out what it was they weren't going to let her take Benji. She finally told them. Benji's father was an evil man and she was fearful of him.
Steve and Kayla told Ellen they could protect her and told her about a shelter that would take them. Ellen agreed, after talking to her father about it. She would come the next day to pick Benji up.
The next day came and Ellen didn't show. Steve went to try and find Ellen. He did. She was dead on the pier.
The search was now on for Benji's dad. With the knowledge that he was an evil man Kayla and Steve now wanted to adopt Benji, but they had to find his father and get him to give up parental rights. Benji's dad found him first.
While with Kayla at the park a car pulled up to them and two men got out, grabbed Benji and put him in the car. They then drove off. Kayla was frantic looking for him with the help of Roman and Steve. Roman had fixed Kayla's phone to record any calls that came in. So when the phone rang one day and Benji was on the other line Kayla managed to figure out where he was. She went to the police station to get Roman and Steve, but they had left on another lead. Kayla went to Benji alone.
Kayla managed to find Benji and stay with him and so did Steve and Roman. They escaped and Kayla and Steve felt the best way to protect Benji from his father was to take him to the Monistary where they'd found him until they could be sure he'd be safe.
Roman had a feeling that Benji tied into a missing link to his past and wanted to question him. Kayla and Steve were dead set against it and wouldn't tell Roman where Benji was. This caused Roman to arrest Steve on contempt charges and throw him in jail.
During this time Carrie Brady had gotten kidnapped. Roman recieved a letter saying "Your child for mine." Roman realized that Benji's dad had Carrie and he was determined to find her. This lead Steve, Kayla, Roman and Diana to an island where they were met by Stefano DiMera who played mind games with Roman. (Isn't that what Stefano did best?) In the end they managed to get everyone safely to Salem. Benji's grandfather, Orion, took Benji and promised he'd give him a happy and good life. Steve and Kayla had no other choice then to let the boy whom they loved as a son, go.

The Diary of Emily and Giedon

 In December 1988 Steve found a badly burned man hiding in Salem. He agreed to hide the man and helped him out. Eventually Steve had to tell Kayla about the man who it was revealed was Nick Corelli, a believed murdered pimp. In covering for Nick and risking going to jail themselves, Nick gave Steve and Kayla his old mansion as a thank you.
Though sad to give up the loft that had held so many memories for the couple, Steve and Kayla moved into the old mansion. While cleaning out the attic one day they found a trunk with old Civil War mementos in it and a diary. Kayla began reading from the diary which belonged to a woman named Emily. It was a love story about her, a girl from the South, and a Union Soldier Gideon.
Emily and Gideon fell in love and their story was played out in memories by Stephen and Mary Beth. It was during the war and Gideon was on the opposing side. He'd gotten sent off to battle after he and Emily declared their love and was believed killed. Emily was heartbroken, and pregnant!
Emily gave birth to a son which she named after Gideon. A year later Gideon was found, badly injured. Emily went to tend to him and eventually told him she'd had his son. They were married and moved to a large manor in Salem where they grew old together.

During this time Marcus had been investigating a minister he believed was responsible for the death of his parents. This would lead Marcus and Steve to go undercover at a revival. But before they could go undercover Steve had to have plastic surgery to "blend in". He got fitted for a glass eye and took off the patch. He went by the name Daniel Lucas.
Kayla also worked at the revival and saw Steve, though she didn't recognize him at first. They secretly met but were caught one day. The minister now became suspicous. Shane was involved in solving the mystery of how Marcus' parents died and there was a struggle and an explosion. Shane was believed to be killed, but everyone else survived. (This would lead Shane to have amnesia and send him into another storyline.)

 

 

Marina Tuscano

 Steve and Kayla returned to Salem to settle into a normal life once again when a mysterious woman found Steve. She claimed to be a friend from his past and Steve was horrified to see her. While arguing with her one day Kayla overheard her say she and Steve were once lovers.
This woman, Marina Tuscano, needed Steve's help in finding a key. Years ago she and Steve were on a boat and had gotten into a fight. She fell overboard and was believed dead. When she fell so did a very important key to a large fortune she'd inherited. Kayla urged Steve to help Marina find the key, if only to get her out of their lives.

Steve and Marina flew to Italy to look for the key. Meanwhile Kayla found out she was pregnant. She planned to fly to Italy to tell Steve the good news. Once she got to Italy and located Steve she found him and Marina in a hotel in an intimate embrace. Kayla misunderstod the situation and left, betrayed. In reality Steve was comforting Marina. He had no desire to be with her and she in turn had no desire to rekindle their old flame.
While in Italy on a boat, reminiscent of the past, Steve was in a scuffle and his eye was once again injured. This time it couldn't be repaired. He and Marina had found the key and were heading back to Salem.
Meanwhile Kayla turned to Jack for support. While going through some old papers in the house she found a marriage license. Steve and Marina's marriage license. With Marina still alive Steve was still legally married to her, this meant Kayla's marriage to Steve was invalaid. Kayla was furious that Steve would keep this from her.
In an attempt to help Kayla and Steve Jack went searching. He found Marina's sister, Isabella, in an insane asylum. Isabella wasn't crazy at all, she was put in the asylum to prevent her from getting any of the inheritance Marina stood to get. Jack helped her escape the asylum and took her back to Salem.
Kayla refused to let Steve back into her life after finding out he'd lied to her for so many years about Marina. Steve found Jack and yelled at him for meddling in his life. Jack then let it slip that Kayla was pregnant. Steve went to Kayla who confirmed she was pregnant. It is a very emotional scene where both Steve and Kayla are so much in love, but can't be together because there is so much mistrust. Steve is happy at the idea that he'd be a father, but sad that he was forced out of Kayla's life.
Marina had turned up dead and all fingers were pointing to Kayla now. As the investigation continued Steve and Kayla slowly rekindled thier old flame. During this time the bandages over Steve's newly, yet once again, injured eye had been removed and the patch was back.
Victor Kirakis was after the key and the Tuscano fortune and kidnapped Kayla in an attempt to get it. Steve rescued Kayla and they spent a magical Christmas in the lighthouse in Salem. Shortly after this Kayla moved back into the house with Steve.
Steve and Kayla planned to remarry, now that Marina was dead. As their wedding, to take place in the living room of their mansion, was beginning Roman and Abe Carver came in to arrest Kayla for Marina's murder. During the trial Kayla went into labor.

The birth of Stephanie

"Her name is Stephanie Kay Johnson and she's 8lbs 3oz of Sweetness."

Stephanie Kay Johnson came into the world as Kayla was out of jail on bond. But it would not be smooth sailing. Soon after Stephanie's birth Kayla went back to jail. Steve took Stephanie home looked for a nanny to help him out with her. The nanny he'd hired was really a distraught woman who'd given birth the same day as Kayla and her baby had died. She took this opportunity to kidnap Stephanie.
Upon hearing about Stephanie's kidnapping Kayla broke out of jail and she and Steve headed across the world to find her. With the help of Bo and Hope in Syndey Australia they got Stephanie back.

During this time Isabella Tuscano remembered accidently killing her sister, Marina and confessed. The charges on Kayla were dropped. (Surprisingly since she'd broken out of jail...but whatever.)

The second wedding

Now that everything was hunky dory Steve and Kayla decided to get married once agian after making sure no more ex-spouses would come into the picture.
Their second wedding took place in a garden in Salem and Jack was supposed to be the best man in an attempt to once and for all bury the hatchet between Steve and Jack. When the ceremony started Jack was no where to be found.

Jack was on a bell tower fighting with Harper Deveraux, who had once again broken out of jail and still wanted revenge on Steve. He had a rifel aimed at Steve. Jack came from behind him and pushed Harper off the tower, causing a commotion.
The commotion was heard at the ceremony and it stopped as Steve and Roman went to check out what happened. Jack told them all, gave Steve Kayla's wedding ring which he'd forgotten he had in his jacket pocket, and Steve went back to finish marrying Kayla as Jack and Roman took care of Harper. Harper died from the fall.

 

Steve�s death

 Steve had a complete character turn around and decided to become a police officer. One night while on duty and making rounds he noticed a suspicious boat in the harbor. He went to investigate and the boat exploded. Steve was rushed to the hospital.
The explosion was meant for Bo who was protesting some actions on the riverfront.

While in the hospital Steve fell into a coma. He once again had a "death" experience where Kayla and a grown up Stephanie pleaded with him not to die. Steve came out of the coma.
Everyone rejoiced that Steve was okay. But while a doctor came into the room to change Steve's IV he really put a poison in it. Steve was talking to Kayla and could tell something was wrong.
Tearfully he told Kayla he didn't think he could stay with her any longer. Kayla sobbed as his heart monitor went to a straight line. Marcus tried to revive him but it was no good. Steve was dead. :(

Later that night Kayla went to the roof of the loft and had flashbacks of her and Steve's time together as "Goodbye My Friend" played in the background.
At Steve's funeral two guys came and switched Steve's coffin with an empty one.

 

 

 

 

TRIVIA on Steve and Kayla

The wedding was written during the 1988 writer�s strike, and was not written by the regular writers of Days. To date it is the highest rated episode of Days of Our Lives and the most anticipated wedding in Soap Opera history since GH�s Luke and Laura.

"If Your Heart Comes Out Tonight" is Steve and Kayla�s song and was written by the staff of Days specifically for the couple.

Stephen Nichols was brought on as a day player in 1985 and was only intended to be on the show for a couple of months. The writers were so impressed with his talent that when he and Peter Reckell (Bo) came to them with a backstory involving their characters the show gave him a contract. Mary Beth Evans was brought onto the show in May 1986 and Stephen Nichols was involved in her audition process.

Shortly after the deaf storyline Days of Our Lives became the first soap opera to become closed captioned.


Mary Beth Evans has done charity work and opened a school for deaf children since doing the deaf storyline. It has become a cause close to her heart.
