The beginnings of the Romulan people

The history of the Romulan people is filled with struggle, revolution, and glory. Thousands of Years ago, the Romulans and Vulcans were one people, one culture, and one race. They inhabited the planet of Romulus. The Romulan people were broken and ununified, violent warfare was constant. Society in this period was dominated by warlord rule in which life was short, harsh and brutal. Out of this brutal period one sees a unique culture emerging, a proto-Romulan culture. These proto-Romulans, our distant forefathers embraced battle, intelligence, loyality, and hard work. Over time weaker elements of Romulan society became fed up with this constant warfare and an individual named Surak emerged. Surak rejected Romulan beliefs and fathered a sect made up of people he refered to as Vulcans. One sees here that Surak broke away from Romulan teachings and formed the first group of Vulcans. Surak's sect of Vulcans rejected warfare and preached the weak ways of logic. As the fights amoung warlords continued for some years, Suraks small sect of Vulcans began to demand an end to all violence and claimed control over all of Romulus, to ensure all violence stopped. One Romulan known as Nar'an, the leader of the Romii Hur, one of the largest and most powerful warlord states, recognized the danger that Surak posed. He knew that the Romulan people could never aspire to glory if they came under the subjigation of Surak and his Vulcan comrades with their weak philosphy of logic, but he also realized that if warlord rule continued Romulans would not aspire to glory either.

The War of Deliverance and the Declaration of the Romulan Star Empire

Nar'an therefore set out to destroy Surak and bring the Romulan people under his unified rule. Nar'an gained allies amoung two other large warlord states, the Fifth Constac Republic and the Geon Kil. With this large support base Nar'an instituted a major civil war known as the War of Delieverance in which he destroyed all warlords who opposed him, and all those who followed Surak and the Vulcan way. This war lasted about twenty three years, by which time Nar'an had gained control of most of the planet Romulus, and in which no other warlords opposed him. Surak and his Vulcan followers controlled a small area known as the Hefcha Plateau. Sensing that he and his belief system had failed, and that his mad quest for power had failed, Surak ordered his followers to construct a large generational space ship in which they would be able to escape Romulus. On the last day of the war of delieverance Nar'an's army had encirlced the Hefcha Plateau and was rapidly advancing on Surak's position. Then Suraks large generational space ship, which lacked warp engines took off. Suraks followers eventually found their way to a desert planet which has become known as Vulcan. Surak choose to retreat as a coward instead of fight for his beliefs. At this point the Vulcan and Romulan people developed their own cultures on their respective planets. Having Conquered the entire planet Nar'an ended the war of delieverance and declared the Romulan Star Empire.

The Early years of the Empire

Following the end of the war Nar'an declared himself the First Praetor and established a national planetary government. Nar'an was the head of a senate which was comprised of senators elected from the various provinces of the empire. The First Praetor said that this new empire would be based on socialism and would bring glory and prosperity to all the Romulan people. For the first thirty years of his rule, Nar'an choose to consolidate his rule and implement many reforms in Romulan Society. He abolished private property and the rights of inheritance, nationalized all banks, centralized the means of communication and transport, gave free education to all children, gained control of all essential state industries, and gave all the right to work. During his rule there was no interal revolt or unrest, all people were granted a minimum standard of living, their was no disease, famine, or unemployment. In short they were very prosperious years. As any wise leader Nar'an did not risk foolish expansionry efforts that could possibly harm his empire and as any Romulan he only carried out calculated and well thought out actions. He saw that the prosperity of Romulus under his control was rapidly expanding, and he knew that soon he would be able to pursue a expansionary policy that would bring even greater prosperity to the Romulan people. He set his sights on the planet of Remus, the sister planet of Romulus.

The Great Patriotic War

Little was known about our sister planet at this time, and accordingly Nar'an sent out many patrols to gather information on the planet. Remus was a planet that was bountiful in resources, resources that could sustain the empire in its ventures. Fifty four mining camps were set up in various locations over the planets surface to mine ore to determine if it could be of use to the empire. These mining camps encountered great success and then one of the darkest days in Romulan History occured. Without warning all contact with the mining outposts on the planet were lost. Many patrols were sent out in search of our lost brothers but they also never returned. Soon after the failed search planetary defence precision approach radar picked up a massive alien fleet departing from the far side of Remus. This fleet sent out a general hail and declared that:

"We come from the distant reaches of this quadrant. Our fleet arrived in this solar system three months ago, we proceeded to land on the planet you refer to as Remus and set up a base of operations. Your exploration of it for mining purposes has forced us to undertake our plans earlier then expected. We control all of Remus and will proceed to take control of Romulus. Your race and civilization will be destroyed and enslaved..."
Not knowing the name of this violent race we proceed to name the the Remen's. The Remen fleet quickly overwhelmed our planetary defences and took control of our capital city. The senate and the civilian population were all executed as a show of force. Nar'an led a brilliant attack known as the glory effory to try and retake the capital but was killed along with all of his forces. A triumvirate was elected from what remained of the senate to lead the empire and liberate our motherland. Over fifteen million citizens were killed in the intial attacks and over thirty percent of Romulus was conquered. But the Remen fleet was far from its homeland, its attacks were brash, showed signs of overconfidence, and were wasteful. They did not create strong supply routes between Remus and Romulus. And due to this the initial pace of the brutal Remen invasion began to slow dramatically. The Romulan military put up a valiant effort, battles were fought in the cities from floor to floor, and ship fought in space above the conquered planet. Nar'an had taken great care to build up a capable, and efforts were begining to show now. The comander who took control of the military after Nar'ans's death was Litcha Trokoan. She was also part of the triumvirate. After five years of fighting Remen success slowed, the invaders employed the great majority of their forces on Romulus, and left Remus poorly defended. In a strategic move Trokoan invaded Remus and took control of the main Remen base. This has become known as the battle for Dskuagrad. The Remens were quite suprised as they had thought that Romulan Forces were to weak to threaten Remus. Due to the weakness of the Remen supply routes and the lack of preparation involved in the Remen war effort, the invading forces could not effectively respond to this attack. During the Remen campaigns, it took our forces two months to conquor the planet Remus. Even though this was a great victory, Trokoan knew that the worst was yet to come. The Remen forces had begun entrenching themselves on Romulan soil and preparing for a fight to the death. Trokoan organized well led attacks on all fronts. Brutal fighting resulted as valient soliders fought in the cities and in the townships. Close quartered fighting was common. Soldiers fought for not for the control of buildings but for the control of different floors. Following nine more years of conflict the Remen forces were on the verge of defeat. and their military leadership decided retreat was the only option. They based their retreat in the city of Kam'chat'ka, their remaining soldiers would group there and then depart on their few remaining ships. Romulan troops overan Kam'chat'ka as the Reman ships departed. Planetary Artillery destroyed every one of these ships and the war ended. None of the attackers who had brought ruin to our planet were allowed to leave alive. 85 million valient Romulans died in this brutal war, and ninety two percent of the surface of Romulus had been utterly destroyed. Our economy was in ruins, the dead lay in the streets, people starved, and disease was every where. But socialism prevailed over the invading Reman force. Litcha Trokoan was proclaimed as a hero throughout the empire. She was awarded the highest military honor availibe, Hero of the Romulan Empire. By a vote in the senate she recieved universal support and was elected Praetor of the Romulan Empire. Trokoan quickly set out to rebuild the Empire.

The Decline of the Old Order, the Federation Cannibals, and the War of Betrayal

After so long the empire began to lose its way. The government was organized under a single Prateur who had began to implement something similar to a neocapitalist economy. Under this system Romulan glory and prestige were harmed. It is not clear when exactly the empire began to lose its socialist ways, but some estimate that the decline began around fifty years ago. The zenith of this decline occured during the regin of the Prateur who preceeded our leader, Al'anan. This was Gdzic'zon. He and many Romulan officials cared more for making profit then for the glory of the empire. Many Romulans suffered and died as a result of this. When one Romulan citizen suffers due to the incompetence of the government, the empire and the socialist ideal is harmed. Most social services and been privatized and only the most wealthy could afford them, this was somewhere around 1.5% of Romulan society. Famine and plague were widespread. Moderate estimates suggest upwards of one hundred million loyal Romulan citizens died due to the greed of Lord Emperor Gdzic'zon. Gdzic'zon had turned his back on every socialist ideal on which the empire had been founded. Gdzic'zon recieved strong support from the facist Continuation Committe. This committe had been created to ensure that Gdzic'zon and his bourgeoise comrades would remain in power. Its sole purpose was to continue the perpetuation of a non socialist Romulan government. Many longed for a socialist society, like the one Nar'an had created. The true downfall of the empire occured when the monster created an alliance with the pathetic Federation of Planets. He did so because he felt that such an alliance would generate greater wealth and prestige for himself. The Federation is a hypocritical institution that has brought us war and harm. It claims to believe in peace, but has shown that it will ally itself with dictatorships and violence to complete its goals, and it will discard its ideals as a situation warrents. This can be shown through one thing. The Federation brought the War of Betrayal(refered to the Dominion war is Federation space) on to our quadrant, through its expanisionry actions in the Gamma quadrant. After the declassification of some documents it was revealed that the Federation murdered a Romulan senator in cold blood to bring our empire in to their war, what of their vaunted ideals?. The Dominion war resulted in the death of ten million brave Romulan soldiers and has left our economy in ruins. How could Gdzic'zon ally himself with an instition that will kill our senators and make our soldiers fight their war. He cared nothing for the brave Romulans that died, he only cared for capitalism and profit.

The Federation inspired Remen Revolt and the Formation of the PFLRE

The Federation quickly realized that Gdzic'zon was a weak and incomptent ruler, and they wished to use this to their advantage. They deployed a Human operative in to Remus. Their objective was for this Human to incite rebellion amoung the loyal Romulan workers of the efficient Reman mines and then for this Human to take control of the Romulan Empire. And in effect the Federation would absorb the empire in to its self. And then they would enslave the Romulan race and the various citizens of the empire. Because of the weakness and the greed of Gdzic'zon, the Tal Shiar was not able to respond properly to this threat and the evil Federation plot succeded. In the end Gdzic'zon and his corrupt senate were killed and the Federation Human operative took control of the empire, our empire. Many loyal Romulans died trying to stop this manic federation operative. One hero stopped the Federation and reclaimed the empire. It must be clear that the Federation will stop at nothing to destroy our empire, and our socialist ideal. Five years earlier during the reign of Gdzic'zon a young creative, resourceful, and respected Tal Shiar officer saw the damage that Gdzic'zon was doing to the empire. With backing from the majority of the senate, the military, and the Tal Shiar Brigader General Al'anan Vor secretly found the PFLRE, or the Peoples Front for the Liberation of the Romulan Empire. He stated that his objective was to overthrow the current Praetor and the continuation committe as they had turned away from the socialist path on which the empire was founded, and in doing so greatly hurt the empire in all aspects. Further more the current leadership had allied themselves with the Federation, a body which had shown itself to be willing to do anything to destroy the empire. Therefore it was the duty of all Romulans to eliminate him. Al'anan said that he was in the process of building up a revolutionary military and that when the time was right he would rise up. The army was to be made up of any citizen, worker, peasant, or solider who wished to participate. When the old guard was defeated he intended to restore the socialist ideology of the empire, radically reform all aspects of the government and the economy and help the people to achieve socialist equality. Al'anan saw the Federation-Reman uprising as the right time. The Federation has always been weak of character, and this uprisng was a bold move, maybe if he struck hard enough they would lose their nerve as they usually do.

The Revolution and the Formation of the Romulan Socialist Union

In a stealthy move Al'anan struck hard and fast. In the opening battle of the grand Revolution Al'anan was able to kill the Human-Federation operative who had taken control of the empire. As he suspected Federation control over the empire disappeared, they were to busy debating this or that to respond properly. The Federation is weak of character! Al'anan assumed control of the empire and redeclared and renamed it the Romulan Socialist Union(Despite this, many people, including official institutions still use the term Romulan Star Empire). As he did this remnenent right wing elements of the dead Gdzic'zon and the Continuation Committe attacked the left wing forces of Al'anan and started a civil war. The revolution was not over, it was just starting. Through brilliant leadership through a war that lasted three years Al'anan was able to use his peoples military and defeat the old guard who had corrupted the empire with their facsist ways. The right wing forces of the Continuation Committe ultimately lost the civil was as they lacked any popular support. The people did not want to go back to the old ways. But we all must be on guard as those right wing forces still threaten us. What is left of the Continuation Committe and the Federation seek to destroy our efforts to create a socialist society. We must be always vigilant and on guard, we must not fail. Socialism is eternal. Our Grand Leader's victory was met with cheers and happiness throughout the empire. Today the Romulan Socialist Union is the revoluntary vanguard for bringing culture and socialism to the oppressed peoples of the galaxy. All around we are recognized as the dominant military, cultural, and economical force. We have encountered nothing but prosperity and glory which will never end. The Romulan Socialist Union will last forever! It must be the goal of all to ensure that our empire never ends. Al'anan alone has restored socialism to the Romulan people. He will reform all aspects of society and improve life for all. We must make sure that we thank him each and every day for the sacrifices he has made for us. Long live Al'anan Vor! With certainty the eternal Romulan Socialist Union will encounter more glory and victory in the future.
