| History: Xianxuan was born to working class parents in Canton, China. He grew up on the legends of hero Wong Fei Hong and dreamed of one day being just like him: Hero, doctor, and teacher. In his free time, Xianxuan gathered and studied every piece of literature he could get his hands on about Fei Hong. To this end he even attempted to join the local Wu Shu team to no avail, but he was allowed to practice with them none the less. The childs determination winning the coach over enough to let him stay. However, the young man did excel in math and history at school and soon gained the attention of the Communist leaders locally as a prodigy and they moved to add him to the hopefuls collected by the government. His parents, not wanting to lose the child to the state chose to take him out of the country. They fled to Taiwan where friends help them settle. Xianxuan took to his new home well, making friends and prospering in school. Taiwan suited the family well, his father found good work and Xianxuan was able to now not only read about Wong Fei Hong, but watch the multitude of Hong Kong made motion pictures about his hero as well. While on the island he also abandoned Wu Shu, starting the study of true Kung Fu. First Shaolin 5 animals, then Tai chi, but the style that most intrigued him was Bagua, the 12 Animal form. This would be the form he would spend the most time with until later in life. Settled at last, he concentrated on this form. Just as his hero, he would learn to balance body, mind and spirit though both education and martial arts. Again, he excelled, but this time through hard work and diligence. Martial arts did not come as easily as math. By age 16 he had graduated early and was sent to the U.S. to attend college and later medical school. While in college at Berkley, he met a woman named Dr. Amy Wen. Dr. Wen had been his junior adviser and the young man found himself increasingly drawn to the powerfully charismatic advisor. Amy outgoing and friendly, took Xianxuan (now going by the American first name of Phillip) with her into the poorer areas of Los Angeles, both Asian and other wise. She let him help her in the community homes, shelters and clinics. This appealed to the strong sense of ethics and the young man decided then that his calling would be in community service. He had his first chance to fulfil his dream of emulating his childhood hero. Also at this time he had another event centered on Amy change his life forever. Phillip was with Amy on one of her runs into the city, working a area plagued by gang violence. They were coming out of the local clinic, when they head the sounds of yelling. The couple rushed over to witness several black teens engaged in a argument. As Phillip and Amy approached they called out to the teen, three of whom they knew. In that instant, all hell broke loose. One of those arguing took advantage of the Asian Doctor and students approach to produce a gun and fire. The hail of bullets spread wildly striking several and racing towards Phillip and Amy. As the other scattered, Phillip slipped through the stream of bullets as if he could tell everyplace the young man would fire. He reached the youth and disarmed him, in shock himself almost immediately after realizing what he had just done. continued |
