(Note: Categories of home improvement/house remodeling work are classified by four levels of difficulty and circumstance, according to the scope of work required.)
- Level 1. Residential home repair work consists of the patching, restoration and/or minor replacement of materials, elements, components, equipment and/or fixtures for the purposes of maintaining such items in good or sound condition. This is the least severe or restrictive level of home improvement/house remodeling work.
- Level 2. Residential home renovation work consists of changing, strengthening or addition of load-bearing elements; and/or the refinishing, replacement, bracing, strengthening, upgrading or extensive repair of existing materials, elements, components, equipment and/or fixtures. Renovation involves no reconfiguration of spaces. Interior and exterior painting are not considered refinishing for purposes of renovation.
- Level 3. Residential home alteration work consists of the reconfiguration of any space, the addition or elimination of any door or window, the reconfiguration or extension of any system, or the installation of any additional equipment.
- Level 4. Residential home reconstruction work consists of the reconfiguration of a space that affects an exit, a renovation and/or alteration when the work area is not permitted to be occupied because existing means of egress and fire protection systems, or their equivalent, are not in place or continuously maintained; and/or there are extensive alterations. Extensive alterations where the total area of all the work areas included in the alteration exceeds 50 percent of the area of the dwelling unit shall be considered reconstruction work. This is the most severe or restrictive level of home improvement/house remodeling work.
