Trina walked into the kitchen to make a pot of tea. She felt so very alone. Drew was with Buck this evening. Again. And Ezra had to work the night shift and wouldn't be off until 4 am, so she couldn't even invite him over to watch a movie.
The water finished boiling while Trina was putting the leaves in the strainer. She poured the water over the strainer and then covered the pot with a tea cozy to let the tea steep.
Trina poured a cup of tea and placed a single biscuit on the plate, then she walked back into the living room. She turned on the stereo and started the CD before walking over to the sofa and sitting down.
Trina looked around the apartment and felt very small. The place was so huge, and she was just so alone. She missed Drew. She missed her brothers. Trina frowned, wondering where that thought had come from.
Sighing she sipped at the tea and picked up a book. Fili hopped on her lap and laid down, purring. She smiled and petted him.
A couple hours later, Trina yawned and put the book down. She picked up Fili and walked down the hall, past Drew's room. Then she walked into her own and changed into her night gown after depositing the kitten on the big bed. A few minutes later, Trina climbed into her bed and soon was asleep.
Ezra poured a cup of coffee out of his thermos and watched the intersection. He looked at his cell phone, then the clock. 3 a.m. Trina wouldn't appreciate him waking her up. He smiled. Ezra was happy to have his sister near him; he always wanted a sense of family, and Drew's presence helped him to fulfill that.
But Trina? Trina made him want to have a family of his own. He wanted her to be a part of his life, and he couldn't bear the thought of her moving away. As much as he hated the idea of Drew with Buck, he knew that Buck's presence might induce his wild sibling to stay.
And if Drew stayed, so would Trina.
As he finished his cup of coffee, Ezra saw something coming towards the intersection. As it drew closer, Ezra could see that it was a woman walking-no...skipping-absently. She was bending down and picking something up, then she'd throw it to the street. It looked almost like she was trying to skip stones on water, but that was ridiculous, this was a street. Nonetheless, Ezra started the car and drove up.
As he approached the person, he could see that it was Trina. Trina, wearing a short slip nightdress and barefoot. He stopped the car and got out.
"Trina?"
Trina completely ignored him as she sat down on the curb and stared out over the street. She had a wistful look on her face.
"Trina, what are you doing out here?" Ezra asked as he walked up to her and sat down. She didn't notice him immediately.
He tapped her shoulder and she looked to him. "I thought ye said ye dedna want ta gae on a walk."
Ezra wondered what she was talking about.
"I thought ye had a date with Fiona."
"Fiona? I don't know any Fiona."
Trina laughed at him. "That's no what ye said last week, William James MacGivern! Ye've got ta stop leadin the girls on." Trina batted his arm. "So, who's your latest lass?"
"Trina?"
She laughed at him. "Ye dinna even know her name? Ach. Will. Da will be so disappointed."
Obviously, Trina was not seeing him. She saw seeing someone named William MacGivern. But what Ezra didn't understand was who that was.
"Trina, why don't we get you home?"
"She's here?" Trina asked him. "Aren't you going to introduce this 'Trina' to your sister?"
Ezra bit his lip. Not only was she not seeing him, she was not recognizing her own name. He knew she had a secret, but could this possibly be it?
"My dear, I believe you're confusing me for someone else."
Trina looked at him a moment. "Ye sure you're no Will?"
"Indeed, my name is Ezra Standish."
"Morrigan MacGivern." She offered him her hand.
Ezra nodded and tried not to frown. "It is a pleasure to meet you--Morrigan." He watched as Trina suddenly just closed her eyes and curled onto her side, sound asleep. Ezra scooped her up in his arms and carried her over to the car.
As he got into the car, he took out his cell phone and dialed the apartment. Drew needed to be aware that the door might not be locked, especially right now, while someone had been stalking her.
The phone rang and rang. The answering machine picked up. "Drew! Come on wake up and answer the phone." He winced as no answer came.
Finally he pulled in to the Oasis. Trina was still curled up and sleeping in the passenger seat. He parked the car and then quickly ran up to their apartment. The front door was shut and locked. Without hesitation, Ezra ran over to Buck's apartment. He had a key, and Drew might need some help.
Ezra pounded on Buck's door. "Buck, open up the door!"
A few moments later, a disheveled Buck opened the door. "Ezra, you got any idea what time it is?"
"Three thirty in the morning. We need to get into Trina and Drew's apartment. It is locked, and Drew might be in trouble. She's not answering the phone."
"Hold your horses there pard. What makes you so sure she's in trouble?"
Ezra frowned and looked at him. "She is not answering the phone, Mr. Wilmington. Drew is not that sound of a sleeper."
"Buck?" Drew asked as she walked up to him.
Ezra stared at her, then at Buck, then back to Drew. All of his worry was quickly supplanted by anger. "What the hell are you doing over here?"
"Ezra, it's three in the morning. What are you doing here?" Drew asked, not even answering him.
"Do you know where your roommate is, Drew?"
"Huh?" Drew asked. "She's at home in bed."
"No, Drew. She's in my car. Sleeping." He paused. "Do you know why?"
Drew smiled. "Because she wanted to spend time with you."
"No. I found her walking down main street. She was sleep walking." He paused a moment. "Give me your keys so I can tuck her in."
"Is she all right?"
Ezra nodded. He hadn't missed the look of worry that crossed her face. She went back and got her bag. Yawning, Drew came over and handed Ezra the keys.
Ezra glared at Buck as he took the keys from Drew, resolving to discuss this later. But now, Trina needed to be tucked in. "Thank you."
He walked over to Trina and Drew's, and unlocked the apartment before going back to the squad car and nudging Trina slightly on the shoulder. She woke up and smiled to him confusedly. "Ezra?"
"Yes, my lass." He kissed her forehead. "Let's get you inside."
She nodded and he lifted her up. Then she looked to him, but she didn't say anything. Ezra walked her back to the apartment. He unlocked the door. Ezra smiled to her and picked her up, carrying her inside. He shut the door and looked down to a soft 'mew.'
"Hello, Fili, I've just brought your mistress home."
Fili responded by rubbing up against his leg. Ezra carried Trina to her room and tucked her in. He kissed her forehead and smiled as she looked up to him.
"What are ye doin here?"
Ezra smiled. "Seeing you safely home, my dear."
She looked very confused. Ezra just kissed her forehead again, "Go to sleep," he said softly. Trina nodded and curled up on her side.
Ezra looked at his watch. It was 4 o'clock in the morning, and he was off as soon as he got the car back to the station. There was no way he was not coming back here.
Ezra drove home and packed a light bag and grabbed his laptop, then he drove over to Trina's and let himself in. He changed into a pair of sweat pants and then went into her bedroom and smiled. Ezra got the blanket and pillow out of Drew's room laid down on the floor beside Trina's bed. If she got up, she wouldn't get past him.
Trina woke up as the sunlight filtered into the room. She stretched and rolled onto her side. That was when she saw him. Ezra was lying on the floor of her bedroom. She vaguely remembered him being here last night, but thought it might have been a dream. But here he was, so she must not have been dreaming.
Trina stood up and stepped around him.
"Trina?"
She looked back. "Good morning, Ezra."
He sat up, and the blanket fell down, showing his chest. Trina stepped back a bit and tried not to stare at him.
"Good morning, gorgeous," he said with a wink.
"What are you doing here?"
He chuckled. "Making certain you didn't go on any more midnight strolls."
Trina frowned and quickly left the room. She went to the bathroom and took a shower. She didn't know if she wanted to deal with that. She had not walked in her sleep since she was five, but why now?
Trina noticed how filthy her feet were. Where had she gone? Obviously Ezra had been the one to find her, which was very lucky. Honestly, she was afraid. What if someone else had found her wandering about?
She dried her hair and put on a robe before going back to her bedroom. Ezra had moved from the floor to the bed and was sleeping again. She didn' t really blame him. He had not gotten off until four in the morning, and it was only seven. Certainly, he had every reason to be tired.
She wasn't sure what came over her, but Trina went over and laid down next to him. He woke and smiled to her, then pulled her close.
"Go back to sleep Ezra," she said softly.
He kissed her forehead. "You, too, Trina."
Trina relaxed in his arms and fell asleep.
A couple hours later, Trina got up again. She placed a light kiss on Ezra' s cheek and smiled to see he hadn't awakened. Then she gathered some clothes and went into the bathroom to change. Trina checked on Ezra and smiled again before she walked down the hallway to the kitchen to make him a brunch he wouldn't forget.
Ezra woke to the smell of cinnamon. It was the kind of smell he'd always dreamt of waking to, and even though Trina had lived with him and Drew for a couple months, he could not remember her ever making breakfast like this.
He walked down the hallway to the kitchen and found her standing in the kitchen, baking up a storm. He saw muffins, and the makings of omelets and waffles. There was fresh fruit and fresh whipped crème.
"Trina?" he said.
She turned to him and smiled. "I hope yer hungry."
Ezra laughed as he looked around the kitchen. "So do I."
"Let me make your breakfast. I wanted it to be hot." She poured the batter on the grill and started up the omelet.
Ezra walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her. "Trina, you know I love you, right?"
She looked back at him and smiled. "I love you too."
"We need to talk," he said as he whispered in her ear. Ezra could feel her stiffen.
"About what?" Trina asked with false cheer.
"I think you know."
Trina flipped the omelet and tried not to respond.
"Morrigan?"
Ezra was surprised when Trina suddenly turned and looked at him, the fear very evident in her eyes. She pushed past him and literally ran out of the house.
Ezra turned off the oven and unplugged the waffle iron, then ran after her. But by the time he got outside, the red car was pulling out of the parking lot fast.
"Damn."
Ezra took out his cell phone and dialed up Buck's number.
"Wilmington."
"Buck, it's Ezra."
"Ezra, I ain't about to argue about me and Drew-"
"Buck, that isn't what I've called about. Look, Trina just took off in the car. She was upset."
Buck laughed. "You're doin real good, Ez. First Drew, now Trina. You want me to call up Laura, Kenin and Karol so you can piss them off too?"
"This is serious Buck."
"Oh, so you want to get Ridley and Alley too?"
"Buck! Why don't you put Drew on?" Ezra got in his car and drove, looking for the red car.
"Ezra? I ain't gonna apologize for-"
"Drew, I'm not calling to yell at you for spending the night with Buck. I don't know what happened. I scared Trina, and she ran."
"What did you say?"
Ezra was silent. "I don't know Drew." He loved his sister and trusted her. But he wasn't going to betray Trina's secret to anyone, not even Drew. "I don't know. But she panicked and ran. Can you get back home, in case she comes back? Breakfast is ready."
Ezra disconnected the call without getting a chance to hear Drew's response to his odd comment.
He sped up as he saw the red car up ahead. He followed her down a private road that he knew led to Ridley's spread. Trina probably didn't know where she was going.
He saw the car stop and Trina ran off somewhere else.
Trina ran into the stables and looked nervously. She didn't know where she was going, only that she had to get away.
"May I help you?"
Trina jumped. "Ridley?"
"Yeah, what's up?"
"I-I don't know. I just had to get out."
Ridley smiled. "So you came here. You want to go inside and sit down for a spell?"
"I'm imposing."
"No." Ridley came over. "Come on."
Trina slowly followed her. She knew she had to leave. Ezra knew. She didn 't know how but he did.
They went inside and Ridley made a pot of coffee.
"Want to talk about it?" she asked as she sat down next to Trina.
Trina shook her head. "I can't. I have to leave and I don't want to. I like it here."
"Why would you have to leave?"
The doorbell rang and Ridley went to answer it. Trina looked at her hands. Everything was wonderful yesterday, and today her world had shattered again. She didn't think she could rebuild again. Not if she lost her friendship with everyone here. Not if she lost Ezra. She'd even been questioning whether or not she'd move to Los Angeles when Drew did.
Trina had found a home here in Four Corners. And the last thing she wanted to do was to leave.
Ridley came back into the room. Ezra was beside her.
Trina looked to him and then to Ridley. Before she could leave, he had pulled her to him. "Thank you Ridley. I'll take her home."
"I can't go home Ezra," Trina said softly.
"You're welcome to stay here for a bit," Ridley said. Ridley looked towards Ezra. "Why don't you go get that coffee and let me talk to her for a minute. You know where the kitchen is, right?"
Ezra nodded. Trina felt him kiss the top of her head, and it just made her feel worse.
As soon as he left the room, Ridley looked to her. "You said you had to leave. Why?"
"I can't tell you. I can't tell anyone."
Ridley smiled. "Well, if no one knows why you're gonna leave, then I would think you wouldn't have to."
"Ezra knows."
"What do I know?" he asked.
Trina looked to both of them and shrugged. She was silent, unwilling to answer the question. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have come."
"No, that's all right, Trina. I'm glad you did. You and Ezra need to talk a bit, but you come out and see me again sometime."
She nodded. "Thank you."
"Miss Prescott, do you object if we leave Trina's car here?"
"No, go ahead. I'll drive it into town later, if you leave the keys."
"Thank you," Trina said as she handed the keys to Ridley. "I shouldn't have driven it anyway."
"No you shouldn't have," Ezra said as he hugged her. "Thank you again for-everything."
Ezra led her out of the house and to his car. She silently got in the passenger seat, but didn't say anything. Trina was trying to figure out how he had found out.
He pulled out his phone and dialed up Trina and Drew's number. Drew picked up almost immediately. "I just wanted to let you know, I found her. I'm taking her to my place for a bit."
Trina couldn't hear what Drew said in response. She listened to Ezra's side of the conversation.
"Enjoy it, Drew," he said then hung up.
Trina just looked at him. "Why are you taking me to your house?"
"Because you and I have to have a little talk, and I think it needs to be private."
She nodded, but she didn't say anything else.
He pulled up to his townhouse. Trina climbed out of the car and stood patiently. Ezra came around and took her arm, then led her into his house. He walked with her over to the sofa and sat down.
"So, what did you want to talk about?" she asked.
"I think you know."
"No, really?" She looked around the room. Trina wanted to run.
Ezra held her close. "Who are you, Trina?"
Ezra watched as she buried her face against his shoulder. He held her. "My name was Morrigan MacGivern."
"Morrigan is a beautiful name. Why did you--?"
"I didn't lie! Legally, my name is Catriona MacKinnon now. But it was Morrigan."
Ezra ran his arms across her back, trying to soothe her. "I still don't understand why you have to leave."
"Because I was a witness."
"Tell me about it."
Trina shook her head, unwilling to continue.
"Trina, does it have something to do with your family?"
She nodded, but didn't continue. "Now I have to go."
"I won't tell anyone. You have my word. Please." Ezra lifted her face so he could see her, and he was unsurprised to find that it was covered in tears. "Trina, I would never allow anything to harm you." He leaned towards her and kissed her gently. "I love you."
"I love you too."
"Then don't go."
Trina still looked uncertain, but she nodded. Ezra kissed her again.
"Sometime, I'd like you to tell me what really happened. But not now."
Trina nodded. Then she looked at him. "You didn't get your breakfast! Ach! I left the oven on."
Ezra smiled. "I turned it off. By now, I'm sure that Drew and Buck have finished everything off. Are you hungry?"
Trina nodded. "A little."
"Then why don't we go to the Grille for lunch?"
She nodded and Ezra stood up, offering her his arm. "Then we'll take you down to get your driver's license. I think you're ready."
Trina smiled at him. "Really?"
"Yeah, you led me on quite the chase. You're ready."
She hugged him. "I'm sorry I scared you."
"Just don't ever leave me, Trina."
She nodded. "I won't."
