Egidius Josephus De Ruyver
(1668-1723)
Egidius Joseph De Ruyver was baptized in the parish of Sint Blasius Boekel
on November 4, 1668 (1). In some documents he
is mentioned as "Jooseph De Ruijver, " son of Philips. In Bottelare
(2) a Judocus (Joos) De Ruijver married on May, 5, 1697 Anna Grootaers
(born in Wondelgem circa January 7, 1670) (3). Witnesses were Martinus De Bruyker, Judocus Oste
and Maria Bruyne. For the following reasons, we believe Judocus and Egidius
were in fact the same person. Normally Egidius Josephus could not be Judocus
because Joseph is not the same name as Judocus (Joos). In slang
Joos was the synonym of Judocus. In the 17th century, however, the priest
probably wrote down the name he heard without looking at the "registers of
baptizes." We believe that Egidius Jooseph was called Jooseph and his name
changed in Bottelare to Joos or Judocus. We have found a document
(4) supporting this in which it is written
that Joos De Ruyver bought a brewery of
his half-brother Jan who had political ambitions and became mayor
of Bottelare. In this document Joos was mentioned as son of
Philip and brother of Jan. Our family name was not really spread in
Flanders. Therefore the "De Ruyver's " of the neighborhood named Philip, Jan and Joos
must have actually been referring to Philip, Jan, and the man whose baptismal
name was Egidius. The brewery was built in the district of "Steenberghe," near
the parishes of Merelbeke and Schelderode. We think Joos was
also an inn-keeper. We did not find many documents in Bottelare for the period
from 1600 through 1796 ("Ancien Rgime" in Belgium). In this small parish,
Joos and Anna's children were born :
Petrus (Pieter) was baptized on January 19, 1698. His
godfather was Egidius De Bruycker, his godmother was Catharina Vernimmen
(first wife of his uncle Jan). Pieter moved to Wetteren ten Ede.
Emerentiana was baptized on April 5, 1699. Her godparents were
(uncle) Joannes De Ruyver and Gerarda Duytschaever. Emerentiana died in childhood.
Franciscus Judocus was baptized on March 19, 1700.
His godfather was called Franciscus and his godmother was Judoca
Moreels (uncle Adriaen De Ruyver's
wife) (5). Frans was an inn-keeper
(6). He died unmarried in Bottelare on January 25, 1757, almost 57
years old.
Joannes Baptiste (Jan Baptiste) was baptized on February 3,
1702. He was the godchild of Joannes De Ruyver and Maria Anna Van den
Plasse. He also stayed in Bottelare as an inn-keeper (7) and died unmarried
on June 26, 1766, 64 years old.
Laurentius De Ruyver was baptized on February 22, 1705.
His godfather was Laurentius De Winne (husband of aunt Catharina
De Ruyver in Overmere) and his godmother was Anna Catharina Grootaert.
He died unmarried in Bottelare on August 18, 1741.
Maria Anna was baptized on September 8, 1706. She was the
godchild of Joannes Benier (?) and Maria Van Grootenbriel (second wife
of uncle Jan De Ruyver). Marie Anne first married in Bottelare
on July 25, 1735 to Cornelius Van der Schuren. Witnesses were
Franciscus De Ruyver and Judocus Hoste. They had six children, all
born in Bottelare. Cornelius Van der Schuren died in 1746 (November 17) and Maria Anna remarried Petrus Van Doosselaer on June
7, 1747. Petrus was born in Scheldewindeke and the family moved to Munte, another small parish in East-Flanders near Bottelare. They
had one daughter. Petrus died in Munte in 1786 (8)
and Maria Anna died
the same year on August, 3 on the day after he was buried.
Joanna Catharina was baptized on April 6, 1708.
Her godfather was Melchior Oste and her godmother was Maria Anna
De Ruyver as Catharina De Ruyver could not be there (aunt
Catharina lived in Overmere). We suppose Joanna Catharina died
childhood.
Joachim was baptized on November 27, 1709. He was the
godchild of Joannes Van Poucke (mayor of Bottelare ?) and Maria
Van Grootenbriel. Joachim died on January 13, 1724 at14 year of age.
Joanna was baptized on December 4, 1711. Her godfather
was Matthias De Ruyver (Uncle Matthijs in Zegelsem) and her godmother
was Livina Creel. She left the country and went to Ghent (Gent) where
she married on April 19, 1743 in the Sint Baafs-cathedral (9).
Joanna and her husband, Livinus De Smet, had seven children,
all born in the parish of Sint Baafs. They lived in the Koestraete
(Cowstreet) where they ran a bakery. Livinus died on April 7, 1788,
73 years old. Joanna died also in the parish of Sint Baafs on
March 13, 1791, 79 years old.
Joseph De Ruyver was the yougest son of Egidius Josephus
and Anna Grootaers. He was baptized on November 22, 1714. He died
unmarried in Bottelare on May 1, 1755.
Francisca Philippina was the youngest daughter (March 7, 1716) and her
godparents were Joannes De Ruyver and Joanna Francisca
De Winne (aunt Catherine's daughter). "Ciska" married Joannes
Benedictus Meuleman (Bottelare, July 15, 1757) and they had only
one son who died childhood in 1760. They stayed in Bottelare in
the district of Steenberge (probably the inn of father Judocus De
Ruyver) where the court of justice took place. Jan Benedictus Meuleman
died in Bottelare on September 9, 1782. Francisca moved to Ghent
where she died in Beguinage (Klein Begijnhof) on August 19, 1794
(10).
Judocus De Ruyver (Egidius Josephus) was not only the owner of a
brewery and an inn, he also had a eleven children. He died in
Bottelare on July 12, 1723. We didn't find any document
(state of goods) (11) in this period in Bottelare. Judocus
was mentioned as the husband of Anna Waterloop (a call-name?).
Anna stayed in Bottelare and she was mentioned in a " landboek"
(12) as the owner of a house near the parish of Schelderode (Steenberghe)
and some land. She also rented some land from Pieter Schollaert.
Anna Grootaers died in Bottelare on December 6, 1749.
