Augustinus De Ruyver  
(1860 - 1941)

Augustinus De Ruyver was born in Laarne (Ascopstraat) on January 27, 1860 (1). He grew up on Ascopstraat where his mother died in 1874 (2). Later on, the family moved to Quastraat where Augustinus' father had died in 1882. Augustinus didn't leave the Quastraat. In 1881, he stood 1 metre 610 mm tall. He signed his marriage-certificate in Laarne on Octobre 21, 1891. His wife, Maria Augusta Colman (also called Augusta) was born on November 1, 1869, also in Laarne. She was the first daughter of Pieter Joannes and Maria Philomena De Craecker. Augustinus had eleven children, all born on Quastraat in Laarne. First he was mentioned as a flaxspinner, later as a tenant farmer. Stien, as he was called, rented one hectare, 29 ares and 50 centiares field in 1917 (3). He must have later left Quastraat 9 because his wife and youngest son died on Bergstraat in 1923. Later on, Stien moved to Kerkstraat in the same municipality of Laarne with his son, Leon. Augustinus died on Kerkstraat on August 4, 1941, 81 years old. What happened with his eleven children? Most of them didn't leave Laarne (4):

    Theophiel was born on January 14, 1892. He was a weaver and stood 1 metre 630 when he had to join the army on October 1, 1912 (Second Line Regiment). On December 30, 1913 he left the army and he married Maria Paulina Duytschaever in Sint Amandsberg on March 18, 1914. Maria Paulina was born in Laarne on September 11, 1892. Both worked in a factory but Theophiel had to fight in the First World War like his older cousins. On July 30, 1914 he began his four year stint as a soldier in World War I (5). In 1916 he changed to the 22nd Line Regiment. Theophiel also survived the "Great War" and returned to Sint Amandsberg. He had three children but, on August 26, 1924 Maria Paulina Duytschaever died in Sint Amandsberg. Theophiel's children moved to Laarne and he moved to Ledeberg, another municipality near Ghent where he found many working-class people. In Ledeberg Theophiel remarried Rachella Maria De Wilde on December 4, 1929. She also was a factory workster and Theophiel was a foreman in the same factory. Theophiel and Rachel had one son in 1932. They stayed at Ledeberg and Theophiel died in Gent (in the hospital) on July 1, 1966.

      On July 11, 1914 a still born son was born in Sint Amandsberg.

      On April 15, 1920, Paula Louisa was born in the same municipality. She was a factory worker on April 28, 1939 when she married Omer Fran&231;ies Arents in Ledeberg. He was also a factoryworker, born in Destelbergen. Omer died in 1993 and Paula still recides in Ledeberg.

      Joseph De Ruyver was born in Sint Amandsberg on March 19, 1921 and he also worked as a textile-worker. On July 18, 1953 he married Elodia Maria De Groote. They had one daughter, Monique De Vos (1943-1996) who married Theodoor De Rycke. Joseph died in Ghent on February 16, 1981; his widow died in 1993.

      On April 10, 1922 a still born daughter was mentioned in the death-certificates of Sint Amandsberg.

      Octaaf was the youngest son of Theophiel and Maria P. Duytschaever, born in Sint Amandsberg on February 12, 1924, six months before his mother had died. Octaaf was called Taaf, as his godfather in Laarne. First he was also a factory-worker but later on he was an employee. Octaaf married Elisabeth Emilie Rutsaert on July 3, 1948. Octaaf De Ruyver died in Gent on September 10, 1997.

        Their daughter, Erna De Ruyver, was born in Ghent on November 17, 1952. She is a social worker. She married Yvan Verhegge in Ghent on September 7, 1973.

      The youngest son of Theophiel De Ruyver was called Charles. He was born in Ledeberg (Hundelgemsesteenweg 351) on March 1, 1932. He was a laboratory-worker and later a foreman in a factory. He married Yvette De Paepe in Gent on July 2, 1955 and they still recide in Ghent.

    Emiel was another child of Augustinus De Ruyver and Augusta Colman. He was born on June 6, 1893 and died on September 1.

    Maria Josephina De Ruyver was born on October 28, 1894. She was, on October 29, the godchild of Josephina De Ruyver (her aunt). Maria, also called "Mietje" was working as a textile-worker when she married August De Smet in Laarne on April 12, 1922. She had six children with August who worked in the local brewery. He was the son of Engelbertus De Smet and Maria De Cock. Later on, August became a farmer. They lived on Kortewagenstraat and later they moved to Kapellestraat (there Maria was an inn-keeper) and even later they moved to Steentjesstraat. Getting older, they went back to Kapellestraat where August died on March 10, 1970. Maria died in Gent (in the Hospital) on April 18, 1982.

    Octaaf was born and baptized on August 12, 1896. His godfather was Thomas Colman. He worked as a farmer in 1916 when he had to go to the town-hall as a candidate-soldier. He must have stand 1 metre 75 and was suitable for the army (6), but he didn't join the army because his older brother had fought during the First World War. Octaaf never left Laarne where he married Marie Louise De Smet, sister of August, on August 10, 1927. First they lived on Kortewagenstraat where René and Maria were born. Later on, they moved to Kerkstraat. Octaaf worked in a factory in Ghent but, when he moved to the Veldweg 1, he also worked as a farmer. Louise, his wife , had a day nursery (cr�che). Louise died in Laarne on September 27, 1971. Octaaf moved with his youngest daughter to the Nonstraat 7 in Laarne where Octaaf died on June 2, 1982. On June 5, he was burried.

       

      40% picture of Renaat DeRuyverHis eldest son was called Renaat Augustien, born on May 31, 1928. René joined the army in Antwerp. He was a hard-working housepainter who left Laarne. He married Ivonna Alida De Smet in Gontrode on June 12, 1959. They had one son, Luc De Ruyver, born in Wetteren on September 5, 1967. Luc is a social worker and the author of this history! René De Ruyver died in Gontrode (Watermolenstraat 2) on August 22, 1982 and was burried in Laarne on August 26.

      Maria De Ruyver was born in Laarne on February 2, 1930. She married Michel Van Rysselberghe in Laarne on August 11, 1951 who was a factory-worker. They had five children.

      Clara Delphine De Ruyver was the youngest daughter of Octaaf and Louise De Smet. She was born in Laarne on January 3, 1932. She was servant with notary Daelman in Laarne. Clara took care of her parents until they died. She died, unmarried, in Ghent on September 26, 1986.

      Maurice August De Ruyver was born on January 13, 1934. He also was a factory-worker and married Emilia Meerschout in Laarne on April 27, 1957. They moved to the Lepelstraat in Laarne. Maurice died without children in Laarne on January 12, 1958, a day before his 24th birthday.

    Emma De Ruyver was born in Laarne on October 11, 1897. She was mentioned as a farmer when she married Cyriel Casimir Van Laecken in Laarne on April 13, 1921. He was born in Laarne on November 21, 1894 and was also a war-fighter during the First World War. Later, he worked as a fireman. Emma had three children with Cyriel before he died in Laarne on June 12, 1936 (in fact, he was a victim of the Second World War). On April 21, 1937, Emma remarried Leonard De Smet, the son of Augustin and Francisca Klinckspoor. Leonard was a workman. Leonard and Emma had two sons. He died in Laarne on July 14, 1957 and Emma died in Ghent on January 19, 1967.

    Leon was born on August 20, 1899. He was also a factory-worker when he was listed as a candidate-soldier. Leon took care of his old father and after Augustinus' death he married Maria Josephina de Trazegnies in Laarne on November 6, 1941. Maria was born in Zaffelare on March 4, 1909. Leon was also a farmer in the Kerkstraat in Laarne and died on February 14, 1960. His widow died in Gent on December 2, 1993.

      The eldest son of Leon and Maria was named Achiel Julia. He was born in Laarne on October 24, 1942. He was a welder. He married Maria De Groote in Laarne on August 17, 1963. They had two children:

        Ann Maria Joseph was born in Wetteren on February 22, 1964 and married Freddy Cnudde on May 10, 1986.

        Patrick Maurits Anna De Ruyver was born in Wetteren on September 22, 1965 and is a farmer in Laarne.

      Leon and Maria de Trazegnies got a daughter in Laarne on March 18, 1944. She is named Irène and married in Laarne on April 3, 1965 to a wood sawyer, Etienne Ongena. Irène and her husband moved to Kalken where they opened an inn. Etienne died by an accident in Ghent on June 18, 1975 and Irène moved back to Laarne.

      Leon De Ruyver's youngest son was Maurits Octaaf, born in Wetteren ( in the hospital) on July 28, 1947. He was a chauffeur and died unmarried in Wetteren on September 8, 1990.

    Petrus Joseph De Ruyver was another son of Augustinus. He was born on March 5, 1901. He was called Joseph ("Jef") and as a 20-years old factory worker, he hsd fitness to join the army. Joseph stood 1 metre 680 mm. He married Zoë Margareta Crucke in Heusden on May 31, 1928. Zoë was born in Wetteren on August 15, 1908 and she was a factory worker. Joseph and Zoë had four children, all born in Laarne.

      Georgina Flavia was born on January 20, 1930 and died the same year on February 12.

      Marcel Petrus was born in Laarne (Zandstraat) on May 8, 1934. He worked as a warehouse clerk and still resides in Laarne.

      Magdalena Maria was born on April 30, 1938 and married Willy Joliet, a construction worker, on October 8, 1960. They had two children.

      Rita Georgette was born on March 28, 1949. She married Jean Delheye on October 1, 1966. They had two children and Rita started a grocer's shop in Laarne (district Zand).

    Alida De Ruyver was born in Laarne on March 8, 1903. She married on February 4, 1925 to Henri André Benoit Van Laecken, a brother of Cyriel Van Laecken who had married Emma De Ruyver. Alida was a factory worker as her husband was. Later on, after she had her two sons, she worked as a housewife. Alida and her husband moved to the Bergstraat in Laarne and they had their two sons. Henri died Laarne on October 20, 1973 and Alida died in Ghent on November 6, 1984.

    A still born daughter of Augustinus and Augusta Colman was born on September 9, 1904.

    Alphons De Ruyver was born in Laarne on November 1, 1905. He too worked as a farmer in the Quastraat, later on in the Bergstraat. Alphons died by an accident (with a burden) at home on November 23, 1923, 18 years young.

    Magdalena Maria was the youngest daughter of Augustinus De Ruyver. She was born on August 1, 1907. Madeleine, as she was called, was a farmer when she married Emilius Prudent Raman in Laarne on November 11, 1928. Emiel was born on January 11, 1909, also in Laarne. He worked as a farmer but, later on, he worked in a factory. Emiel and "Leine" also stayed in Laarne (Dendermondsesteenweg) where they had three children. Miel died in Gentbrugge on April 20, 1984 and his widow died in the same hospital on August 9, 1987.
