| Day 18 --Thursday -- 26/12/02 -- Boxing Day -- Hyde Park & Covent Garden: Boxing day is called "Boxing day" because back in the time of "Upstairs Downstairs", when the servants had to work on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to prepare the holiday's meals for their masters -- the Lords and Ladies -- only a day after Christmas they received their vacation (one day or half a day) with a box of present -- and thus "boxing". As in Christmas -- most of the museum's and shops are closed, but the Tube works. I went to see the Startrack Exhibition in Hyde park which was expansive -- yet very nice. It showed the scenery from the show, the costumes -- as well as an opportunity to walk inside the Enterprise -- from the Engine Room to The Bridge. Lunch I ate at the Dairy Restaurant -- on the bank of the Serpentine -- which was very tasty and not expansive. From there (Taking Knightsbridge Tube -- Piccadilly Line) I went to Embankment Station (Northern Line Charing Cross Branch) from which I tool another **Sherlock Holmes London Walk Tour (The Embankment Thursday Tour) -- which was guided by a great guide named Corina. The walk goes from the Embankment, along the Royal Opera House to Covent Garden and returns to Charing Cross station, while explaining a lot about the area and shos a lot of places appearing in the Sherlock Holmes stories. The Charing Cross monument, after which the station is named was build by King William for his beloved wife Elinor. The name "Charing" came from French -- "Chez Ren" -- "My beloved wife". After the tour I crossed the Thames on The Millennium Bridge, and had a nice Christmas Mince Pie and Tea at The National Theatre. Links: London walks Start: Marble Arch (Central Line). End: Embankment Tube (Northern Line -- Charing Cross Branch). |
