Mission San Juan Bautista © 1998 DLW

The cornerstone of the present church was laid in 1803. The adobe block is said to contain a bottle which preserves a contemporary description of the dedication festivities.

The church has been in continuous use since its dedication in 1812. With its nave & side aisles it is the widest of all the original mission churches, & at 41 feet, the walls are the tallest in the mission chain. During 1906 quake, the outer walls collapsed, but miraculously the inner walls stood firm, and are now bolstered by concrete buttresses. (DLW, August 1998)
