I want to be able to have music going twenty-four seven. I blow more of my money each month on music than on anything else, not including rent and bills. Oh and food. And cigarettes. But those things keep me from dying or going insane. I listen to music all day at work, either in the store or in the delivery car. Then I listen to music on the bike ride home. Then I get home and play my guitar. I am, in fact, listening to Ben Harper right now.
Now that you have some idea of how much music means to me, I will attempt to classify my taste in music to you. My roommate, a man who prides himself on his broad tastes in music, likes to generalize my tastes, saying that I pretty much only listen to punk rock. This could be construed as partially true, from one standpoint. I will admit that more than half of the music I own is punk, and more than half of what I listen to is punk, but this is not the only genre I'm interested in. I like some classic rock, some straight up rock and roll, a little reggae, classical, funk, some hip-hop, bluegrass, Irish folk music, Native American music, ska, a little techno, dub, and even some rap. About the only genre I won't touch is that poppy-dance-techno bull pucky they play on pop stations.
Now, with all that said, I must point out that the greater bulk of what I listen to is, in fact, punk. There is just something about it that resonates with me. I relate very easily to the subject matter (anarchy, rage, parties, politics, and philosophy, to mention a few). I have this nasty tendancy to get bored with other types of music, particularly slower types. I start thinking how much better it would sound if it was played about three times faster, on electric instruments with the distortion turned way up, and sang by someone who's pissed off.
So now you know. I like a lot of bands, a lot of music, I just need the punk. If I listen to something slow, I generally need to hear something fast immediatly afterwords. In fact, Ben Harper is just now ending. Next up: Bad Religion!
