Summer Fun (Contributed by Jim Harris)
In the late thirties and early forties every summer C. L. Lively and me would walk down Harbor drive toward Navigation Blvd. to the 69th St. Bridge. There were huge Magnolia Trees on each side of the Bridge and they were always loaded with huge Magnolia blossoms. We would climb the trees and gather a handfull of blossoms and then stand on the side of the bridge and wait for cars to come by. Would hold up the blossoms and yell as loud as we could "Flowers for sale", people would stop and ask the price, we would tell them what ever they wanted to offer. We received anywhere from 10 cents to as high as a dollar. When we sold all we had gathered, we would walk back to Lyons Ave. catch the bus and head for town to the Uptown, Iris or Ritz theater for the double feature Cowboy movies. We would do this so long as the flowers were blooming. To us it seemed like a lot of money and it was a fun thing to do. Podunk was truly a fun place in which to grow up.
