I found out about this website from my brother (Roy) yesterday and am fascinated by it. Our home on Texarkana was across the street from my best childhood bud, Darrell Hobbs and his sister Sharon. Next door to them lived Carol and Gary Easterling with their parents. Other neighbors nearby were Michelin, Gandy, Sterns, MacAurthor. The MacAuthor's were the "older" couple on the block with no children, so we got to occasionally reap a harvest of candy from them for no particular reason. I remember frequenting Penrod's grocery down the street where we would buy an RC Cola and fill it with peanuts. Later Caraba's grocery opened but we always thought Mr. Caraba was a bit grumpy. I now live in Arlington, Texas . . . retired in 2001 after 34 years as a technical writer with Vought Aircraft Company in Dallas. My wife, Barbara, and I have been married for 37 years . . . have three grown children and five grandchildren. I found an entry in this guestbook from Carol Easterling. Unfortunately, she didn't include an email address. She was my date for my senior prom in 1962.

The years I lived in Denver Harbor are forever etched in my memory. The people ,the good times, the not having a worry in the world. I read the story on Mr. Carraba and got angry all over again but thanked God I had met him as a child and had seen him just a few months before his murder, I was home on leave from the Navy. Paul Durrett was my earliest friend along with Billy Harris, Judy Gaddess, later on Tim Brinson and too many others to name. Went to visit my aunt before she died on Texarkana St. but thats been 13-14 years ago. I live in Tomball now and will have to make a trip over there soon.

My grandparents, Jack and Viola Lewis, moved to Denver Harbor in 1938 and lived at 127 Kress until 1988. My parents, Jack and Fay Lewis, moved from Denver Harbor in 1965 and built a new home off Oates Road. My father also attended Eliot Elementary but attended Marshall Jr. High and Davis High School. It seems that in those days that there were so many of us the same age that lived with blocks of each other: such as: Leslie Brown, Lena Cash, Wayne Landrum, Ina Gooding, Kathy Espinosa, Sue Parrish, Marsha Jennings, Roy Seabolt, Johnny Lemon and Raymond and Libby Sanchez. There are many of us that still attend an annual Denver Harbor reunion in October at the Monument Inn, some of these people call back to the 1930 and 1940's.

Hi, I would like to also thank for creating this website. As we grow older in life, it can be very easy to forget where it is we came from. With that said, I'd like to tell my story of where I'm proud to have come from...Denver Harbor. My name is Martin Enriquez. I lived on Wiggins street (back where all the wharehouses are). My mother (Dolores Enriquez-Rojas) still lives there to this day! it was a one bedroom house with a dirt floor. My mother would tell me how if she needed water she would have to go to the "pump" and get it. They added to the house with time and made it a simple home. My mother had a brother who lived just down the street. His name was Emilio Mancha. He had a wife, Henrietta and eight kids! I used to love walking to their house as a kid because there was always something going on. I had three older sisters myself (Linda, Teresa and Mary Dolores). But, they were older than I was. My mother worked at Trahan's as a meat wrapper. I would go visit her and play around the store. I went to Ressurection for a few years. But, my mother wanted me to attend a Lutheran school. The only names I remember growing up are Steve Hernandez, Simon Reyes and his mom Mrs. Reyes (I had a crush on her...shhhh), Paul Velasquez, Billy Russo and the Gonzalez family because my cousins knew them very well. There are plenty of other people, I just can't remember all the names. But, what really sticks out in my mind as a child is the times I spent with my cousin Richard Mancha when he was a Youth counselor for the church. He would do so much for the kids in the area. I think any one who is reading this and knew Richard would agree. He would decorate the church like no one's business. On Sunday mornings people would actually look forward to seeing the talents God had given him. Then, My cousin Jessie (his brother) would fill the church with sweet beautiful music during service. Richard passed a way quite some time ago.To this day, I still cry when I think of him . But, I know he's in a much better place where we can only hope to join him. I thank God I have those memories in my mind and in my heart. And, all the rest of the memories that I can't even begin to type out. I still go every chance I get to visit my mother. She loves to cook breakfast for me and jsut sit and talk. She's 84 now and can't even begin to think of living her remaining years anywhere else. There's a certain peace in that home I grew up in. A peace that few people, no matter where they came from, will ever find. Thanks again.

What a fantastic idea. I would like to personally thank you for bringing all of us back together. I have such wonderful memories of Denver Harbor. The biggest crush I had in junior high was the cheerleader named Wayne Sternes. I'll never forget walking downstairs to the first floor and fell right on my butt in front of Wayne. Funny how things that seem so traumatic back then are so funny now. Does anyone know what ever happened to John Ray Perez? There are so many people that I wonder what ever happened to them. Virgie Perez, Ester Garza, Joann Saucedo, Sophie Vargas and Norma Robles were a few of my best friends. I was so blessed to have so many friends growing up and never realized how hard it is for kids today to realize how we grew up with such wonderful friends. Of course I knew all of my brothers friends like Cindy and Becky Gandara, the Ortiz family, the Russo's, the Newman family, the Aranda family, the Rodriguez family, the Saucedo family, actually I think we knew just about the whole neighborhood. With 10 kids in the family how can you not. Sadly I cannot say that about the neighborhood I live in now. Does anyone remember Russo's? Yes, I remember the Venus, Burts, Blakey Drug Store, etc. Times change and so do people, but memories are imbedded in our minds. I married Steve Aranda and divorced. We had two sons - Steven Keith Aranda 27 and Christopher Alec Aranda 24. Steven graduated from Texas State University in San Marcus and works in Houston at Reytec Resources along with his bother Chris. I have no grandchildren, but I do have 2 grand dogs. I work for Houston Community College in Houston and am very blessed to still have all of my siblings and my dad - 89 1/2 yrs. old. We lost my mother to diabetes and heart disease on July 17, 1989. I am presently engaged to Rene Patrick Hernandez from Baytown, Texas. Again, I would like to thank you for starting this wonderful web site. Look forward to seeing other entries.

Comments: What a wonderful place to grow up! Memories zoom through my head. Some of the places I remember that may not have been mentioned by others: Rose’s Dept. Store on Lyons near Harbor Street (there was a food counter that served the best hamburgers in the world), Weiner’s and Danburg’s for clothing, Dr. Hackbarth’s Dentist Office, the Dairy Queen on Lyons at Majestic, the book mobile that parked across from Dairy Queen once a week (before we got the library), Gordon’s Jewelers next to the Venus Theatre, the old post office near the Venus, Trahan’s grocery, etc. I remember how people “packed” into Faith Memorial Baptist Church on Kress on Sunday mornings in the early to mid-1950’s. I loved going to Weingarten’s with my parents for groceries because I could always go to the bakery and get a Neopolitan Slice, then buy a comic book and go sit in the car to read. I had great neighbors right by me….my relatives across the street (the other Davenport family)…Hammonds…Tittsworth…Baxley… Perez….Rhodes….Pope…Garrett….so many others.

I am so glad to find this website. I haven't finished reading all the stories, but so many of them are my own memories. We truly did have something special by living in Denver Harbor. I only wish that we realized it when we came of age and left. I would never had gone. Can you immagine what the place would be if we all stayed and kept the same values that our parents gave us? I do have a quick memory that I want to write about later. Do you remember Carabba's Store? It was on Kress and Colfax.

I am proud to call Denver Harbor home. I see the older white people in the neighborhood and it inspires me to find out about denver harbor's past. I knew quite a few.... my grandmother is one! I've seen pictures from the early 1900's. wow what a difference. The house i live in is one of the oldest houses in the neighborhood. also the house right across the street. well thats what an older woman who used to live right across the street used to tell me.(Ada Crane) I beleive my house was owned by the aunt of clyde bonham, of the notorious bonnie and clyde. in the attic of my house on the corner of force and port, you can see where the original roof was.I think i saw a book at the library about our historic podunk. i'll read it and reveiw it for anyone interested.

So many times I think of summertime in Denver Harbor. We would hop on our bicycles and no one worried about us as long as we got home before dark. I spent lots of time at the library and the swimming pool. I also remember the dances held at the park. Remember the time it snowed 13" (It must have been late 50's or early 60's, because I was at McReynolds.)? We stayed out til all hours playing in the snow. The next morning the sun was shining, and my daddy took us for a ride to see what Houston looked like all white.

I have so many wonderful memories living in Denver Harbor. Going to Blakey's to watch my brother Val eat his banana split for free for his straight "A" report card, while my Mom bought me a single dip cone because she felt sorry for me. Going to the Venus theatre on Sat. afternoon with friends to watch movies. Mom taking me and my two brothers to Weiner's at the beginning of Summer to put our school clothes in layaway for the next semester school year. Remember playing on the I-10 freeway while it was being built. Going to the the public pool at the park during the summer with all my friends. Going to watch my Dad, Val Ochoa, manage the softball team named the "Fugitives" at the DH softball field, which my brothers , Val Jr and John were members of the team. Gathering soda bottles to get money to go eat french fries at the El Sombrero with Becky & Cindy Gandra. Hanging out at Resurrection church Bazaars and going to the dance at the church hall with Sylvia Salinas, Marylou Rodriguez, Lupe Pardo, Betty Nafgar, Linda Perez, Robert and Tony Ortiz, Frank Tijerina, and so many others. Sorry that Denver Harbor is not like it used to be so many years ago. It was great place to grow up in.

My dad, Howard Jennings lived on Rouse Street, went to school at Elliott, Marshall Jr. High and Jeff Davis High School. We were members of Denver Harbor Presbyterian Church in the 50's and 60's. My mother worked at McReynold Jr High as the cashier in the lunch line during the mid 1960's. We spent lots of summers swimming at the Denver Harbor pool. My sister, Marsha and my brother, Michael went to Elliott, McReynolds and San Jacinto High School. Unfortunately, my mother passed away in 1980, my brother passed away in 1990 and my sister passed away in 2000. I still live in Houston, on the west side of town. I remember as a small child, going to Rettig's Ice Cream parlor on 69th street, I think, for a treat. What great ice cream. We also used to eat at El Sombrero. They had some of the best dinner rolls. Does anyone remember skating at Cook's roller rink off of Federal Road? Those were the good ol' days for sure

Comments :I enjoy reading some of the memories of folks who lived in the neighborhood long before me. I'd enjoy hearing from some of them who wish to share more of how things were like back then and I'd gladly share with them of how things are now in the neighborhood.
I read with so much fascination all the stories and memories of everyone who at one time or another lived in this neighborhood named Denver Harbor. I, too, lived there as a child and have many fond memories.
My family moved there around 1970. From what I understand this was about the time that most of the neighborhood was becoming home to more latino families and what is now the perdominate ethnic group who now call Denver Harbor home. You still find a handful of elderly non-latino residents who still call this neighborhood home. They stayed because they were respected and cared for by their neighbors.
I'm happy to report that Denver Harbor is still a very unique neighborhood filled with hard working, family oreinted and caring people. Of course many of the homes are 50, 60, maybe 70+ years old, so it's expected that the neighborhood looks it's age.
Yes, some of the old landmarks mentioned are still around, Burt's Meats -people come from all over for their cajun boudan, they still sell produce but they moved it inside. The Globe theater building became a tire supplier with it's huge half buried painted tire out in front. The Venus theater, which was a dollar theater for us in the seventy's has been bulldozered to make room for the new neighborhood fire station. The old firestation on Lyons and Kress is still standing. Lyons Ave is still the main business artery. The library on Market street became a community center because the neighborhood got a new larger library at Cliff Tuttle park on Lyons and Kress across from the firestation. The Denver Harbor Gymnasiun was bulldozered to make room for a new Gym/Community center. Resurrection Catholic Church is still an important part of the neighborhood.
The Little League baseball season opening day parade is still a day marked on calenders.
Denver Harbor, now more widely known here and in most parts of Houston as just simply " D.H. ", is still a place where the people who grew up there are still "viewed with that certain respectful fascination."
