  Pugh Elementary

(Contributed by Carol Hoodenpyle)

I went to Pugh from kindergarten thru sixth grade. At the time, it was fairly new and Mrs. Gervers was the principal. Mrs. Gee was my kindergarten teacher and neighbor. We lived in the 1000 block of Gazin, right across from the DH Park. Mama had me walk with Mrs. Gee to school in the mornings. Problem was Mrs. Gee walked fast and I had to almost run beside her to keep up. She never seemed to notice me panting by the time we got to school, 2 1/2 blocks aways.

Pugh always had some type of carnival or event happening. Mama was active in the PTA as an officer the entire time I was in school there, so we always knew what was coming up. We had the big Halloween carnival, holiday programs, square dancing, trips to the symphony. A day or two before Halloween, Mama and Mrs. Morgan (Grady and Tommy's mom) peeled a lot of grapes, put them in a huge bowl of water and kept them in our refrigerator. I never knew why they did that. However, when we went thru the darkened haunted house, we'd put our hands inside a covered container that held ice cold witches eyes that we'd have to touch.

There was the May Fete, where each grade would dress in costumes and do dances from different country or such. We had snow cone sales after school on Fridays.

In the sixth grade, Cushman scooters were the big thing. Butch Cook, David Womack, or Lloyd Pugh would come by my house after school and take me for a ride. I realize now how much my mother must have held her breath while we'd go sailing down Gazin, down by Joe Bradberry's house, down by the school and home.

Just thinking about those days took me back to a time when life was so simple and happy. It took me home - to Podunk.
