The Flying Nun

(Contributed by Thelma Torres Cerda)

In 1965, on Wednesday nights, Resurrection Church would have teenage CYO - so I would go with Stella Moreno (who lived on Rouse St.) and her cousin (who lived on Majestic). Max Gandara, Fernando Esculera and some of the crowd would also attend.

One time, Fernando, Fernando's girlfriend, Lydia (from Eldorado), Max and myself decided to skip the class. We were going to go to Denver Harbor Park to discuss important topics as: Who is your favorite Beatle, What kind of car I will purchase when I graduate, then return back in time to get our rides back home.

When the class began we sneaked out and started walking out of the building through the school playground to the back gate towards the park. From out of nowhere came a nun with her black outfit - so you can imagine how she scared us since it was very dark and she said in a loud religious condescending voice "WHAT ARE YOU FOUR DOING OUT OF CLASS!!!!" WHERE ARE YOU GOING???? The four of us were taken by surprise so the only thing we could think of was to run and run we did.

The four of us took off running like 4 scared wild chickens - and to our surprise the NUN started running after us - she could run fast and with her nun uniform flowing in the wind on a dark night; I said to myself "HOLY COW WE ARE BEING CHASED BY DRACULA- I GOTTA GET OUT OF HERE BEFORE SHE GAINS WIND AND FLIES OVER US!!!

I ran as if someone set my hair on fire and was going to put it out with an ax! Let me tell you this, that ugly nun could run and run fast she did. It was like the movie Alien where you do not see the monster; your fear is the worst. I imagined she was ugly, maybe a wart on her nose and mustache.

I was losing speed knowing this old alligator was gaining on me. Luckily, Max grabbed my hand and we ran and ran and finally the nun just gave up.

When we got to the park we were out of breath thinking we had made a safe escape. The worst part was that we had to go back to the church to get to the cars to go home. As we approached the school, the wicked witchy nun was waiting for us. Luckily Fernando, Max and I did not go into the building but Lydia did to get her sister.

Lydia was in a trap - the old alligator/Dracula squealed on us to Father O'Connor and the WWF yelling match had started and I mean yelling. But Lydia did not let the nun get the best of her. Lydia yelled back; she held her own against the wart nose/mustache alligator.

The nun informed Lydia that her parents would be informed of the situation, but Lydia, not showing any fear, told her go right ahead. Stella Moreno was looking frantically for me and was scared that I would get caught by the Dragon Lady nun, so we got in the car and took off.

The next day the phone rang - I picked it up and it was Father O'Connor and he wanted to speak to my mother. I told him I was Lupe Torres and that Thelma did not go because we had gone to the hospital to see a sick relative at Herman Hospital. Father OConnor said fine we look forward to seeing her next week. It was safe from the flying nun what a relief!

I never realize that nuns keep themselves in such good shape they could run like a jaguar and fly like Dracula. Every time I see a nun in her black outfit I get the urge to run and run as fast and as far away as I can.
