First Kiss

(Contributed by Jim Harris)

In 1936, my first year at Elliott School, all the first graders were assigned to Mrs. Egg's class.  It was a whole new world to me and I'm sure to the other kids as well, starting to school was a huge step.

In the afternoon just before the end of the day, Mrs. Egg would have us form a circle with all our chairs and then would read stories to us.  This one day I was setting next to Patsy King, a little girl with bond hair and always happy and friendly.  During the story, Patsy would put her arm on my shoulder or tickle my ribs, being very sly so that Mrs. Egg would'nt see.

When the story was completed and Mrs. Egg was going back to her desk, Patsy leaned over and kissed me right on the mouth.  I had no idea what a kiss was and asked Patsy what in the world that was about, she smiled and said "I like you", all the other kids started teasing me and It would have been great to have a place to run and hide.

Patsy and I were in the same classes until the 6th grade and were friends all through Grammar school. She grew into a beautiful Teen Ager and we went to different Jr. High schools.  I have often wondered where life took Patsy.  I hope all her dreams came true and I have never forgotten that "first kiss".
