There are only two differences between hirigana and katakana. Visually most of the letters look different, and the usage for katakana is slightly different than hirigana.

First, let's look at the katakana chart

 


Every thing is in the same order as the hirigana chart and all pronounciations are the same.
Now that you have learned the chart I will explain to you the difference in usage of hirigana and katakana. Hirigana is used to write out Japanese words. Katakana is used to write foreign words and is used for emphasis, much like italic font.
Now, we can look at our example sentence "Jill threw the ball" and make it into a completely Japanese sentence ジル-さん は ボル を なげました。
