MR2 AW11 - The Boot
Factory air filter
This is the factory air filter system from the MR2. The actual filter is in the round bit, which is normally located in the passangers side corner of the boot (rear). The plastic pipes run around the back of the boot and down the drivers side, where it sucks air through a small hole (about 6 x 2 inchs) which is in the top of the engine bay cooling vent on the side of the car (behind drivers door). This in no way an ideal system. Toyota make great cars, but this is bit of a joke! This system weighs approximately 4 kg, so will make quite a weight saving with it removed.

These are two pictures of the boot where the air filter and battery will be located. As you can see in picture one, it was a bit neglected and small patches of rust have snuck in. The lower picture shows the area cleaned up and the rust has been treated and primed.

I am going to build a division so the battery and filter will be blocked off from the rest of the boot. This will be approximately where the wiring loom bung is. A hole will be cut in the side of the car so that cold is ducted straight onto the filter.

These pictures show the Simota air pod that is going to be doing the job. I found some PVC pipe that was the correct size to fit the mouth of the filter and at the other end I have cut the accordian type piece off the factory system so it can be attached to the air flow meter. I was quite lucky that the piece of pipe I had was perfect fir at both ends!

This is the Champion Vortex battery that will power the audio as well as the car. It's a high drain battery that is designed for this sort of thing.
