In school it happens that children are beaten with a cane when they do something wrong. It can also happen when children don't do their homework or wear slippers to school  in stead of shoes. It can even happen when a child answers a question wrong or doesn't know the answer.

The relationship between adults and children is very different from that in the Netherlands, it's much more authoritarian. You could say an adult is the master and the child is the slave. The child has to do what the adult says. If not, the cane!

In a class the level of the children differs greatly. You can have children that can' read a word and children who are able to almost read a children's newspaper. That makes teaching difficult. There is in general not much attention for children who stay behind. They are just left behind and the teacher goes on.

Classes are full, resources are scarce.

Just a few things to keep in mind. You may think I'm too negative, but in my opinion you need to realise what you are going to face.
Volunteer in Tokokoe?

So there are quite a few things to take into consideration before wanting to do volunteer work in Africa. Like I said there are plenty of organisations that can help you get there. Most of the times you have to pay a lot of money. I'm not saying that all organisations are bad and give you nothing in return, but still it is kind of strange that you have to pay to do volunteerwork.
If you want to there could be a possibility to do volunteer work in Tokokoe. There a three schools there: a kindergarten, a primary school and a junior secondary school.
They can always use some help. The children in the kindergarten almost don't sppeak English, their language is Ewe. But still they have to learn English. Classes are very crowded though. The higher you get in the primary school, the better their English is, but also there their level is very low. Every year children leave the JSS without being able to read and write in English. So when you go it would be wise to learn some Ewe before going. I can help you with that.

You do have to remember though that it is volunteer work and that you will not get paid. People can cook you food and a place to stay is no problem.

I think it would be best to send me an email so we can discuss the possibilities and your preferences.
Any questions? Feel free to email me!
