Goods for Tokokoe

Apart from raising money here in the Netherlands we also collected some gods. On the picture here on the left you see hospital beds. We actually came across the coincidentally. My father was collecting books from
Read To Grow in Helmond and they asked him if he could take along some more books to go to Friesland. My father did and when dropping them off he was offered some beds for the clinic. There was a container there with goods for The Gambia and had several beds in it. The man asked if my father was interested in getting some others? Sure! And so we ended up sith six hospital beds.
Now pregnant woman can properly lie down when in need of attention!
The beds were shipped to Ghana with the help of the Dutch Embassy in Accra through their Small Grants Programme. The beds were not the only goods, we also shipped computers, toys and a lot of books. The books came moslty from Read to Grow. They saw my old website and asked if they coould help with books. That was really great since we just started a library in the old postoffice building! Also het Maartenscollege gave us a lot of books. Wonderful!

The word under LIBRARY on the picture is pronounced as AG BALE XLE PHE. (The E like the first E in 'ever', X is like X in Spanish) and literally means Book (agbale) Read (xle) Place (phe).

A lot of toys were collected by the children of the Dom Helder Camara-school, my old primary school. They are badly needed in the kindergarten and the lower classes of the pirmary school. Imagine being in kindergarten without toys! More than a hundred children going to school for the first time, having to learn English and nothing to play with!
It also makes the job of a teacher almost impossible!

The computers were assembled with the help of my uncle, Adrie van der Heijden and some colleagues of my father. Most of the children in Tokokoe have never even seen a computer!
Togbe Anive is on the picture, one of the chiefs of Tokokoe and chairman of the SMC, the School Management Committee, who together with the PTA (the Parents Teacher Association) look after the well being of the schools in Tokokoe.

I believe these goods will contribute to the betterment of education in Tokokoe. I understand that good education doesn't come only through materialistic things, but they can sure help! Books and toys make a teachers job less stressful and help the children to learn more.

I must say that shipping goods is quite a hassle, but in the end it's all worth it!
