Creative Writing

Creative writing is a
term used to separate artful and imaginative writing
from scientific, professional or journalistic
writing. It is a form of writing suitable to all ages
and all social groups regardless of their technical
ability or imaginative skills. Creative writing
includes but is not limited to:
- fiction;
- drama for stage
or screen;
- poetry;
- screenwriting
writing for films;
- self-exploratory
writing (e.g. autobiography);
- mixed writing
that introspectively uses all of these or
other forms of writing.
Formal courses in
creative writing for adults are becoming very
popular. We can find courses that last from one-day
to three- or four-year university undergraduate and
master's degrees. Many elementary schools incorporate
exercises in fiction, self exploratory, and poetry
writing into their basic grammar and composition
courses as an introduction to self expression. The
university program in creative writing has become a
popular addition to English studies programs.
Creative writing courses are frequently offered in
addition to courses in English education, technical
writing, communication arts and professional writing
as electives for liberal arts majors or minors, and
English majors and minors.
