Europeans do not use the East/West or North/South on their traffic sign but name of cities. It may sound a little crazy but you will get use to it. What you need is to know the name of the city you want to get to and the major cities around. For example, If you want to go South from Paris, all you need to know is that you want to go to the direction of Lyon/Marseille, if you want to go North from Lyon, you care for signs for Paris or Lille. Below are links to some maps with directions. Please look at the maps and feel free to look at www.mappy.com if you want to check more stuff. For the high-tech people who have a handheld, you can download maps of towns for free from www.mappy.com. For the others, you can buy maps from Lyon sometimes in the US, definitely in France. AAA has maps of France and European countries but I do not know if they have maps of French (or European) cities.
