Recent News :

March 9th 2007

MCES was a great success and we are ready to expand next year we had 285 athletes this year and our plan is to break 400 next year. Everyone improved their times some by two minutes!!! Those novice girls have really improved since our first 2k test on January 22.

We now have a week off for spring break and unfortunately we won't be traveling as a team this year. Hopefully we can find the funds for 2008. The weather should be sweet this week and hopefully melt the ice that is still on Hoover.

This season we will have a women's novice 8+, a Women's Varsity 4+ and a Men's Varsity 4+. We have a few extras that will be fighting to get into a boat. Criteria for the first lineups are attendence, technique on the erg and erg scores. Once we are on the water it will all come down to who can move the boat. Obviously if you come to practice you will get faster and improve your technique.

February 5, 2007
We have been under way now for a little bit and everyone is working really hard. We are practicing Sunday, Monday and Thursday with 2 other days a week on your own. We hope to make a trip to the Tanks in Cincinatti on Feb 17 and MCES is on Saturday 2/24. Come on down to OSU's RPAC to show some support or volunteer so our kids can rest up for the race.
We have almost finalized our race schedule but we are sure to go to the Ohio Cup on 4/14, we will have a Dual meet with Witt on 4/21 and we will be returning to West Virginia on 4/28 to finish the season.
2008 may be the year that Denison sends its first boat to Dad Vails! Our novice girls are looking strong!
Stay tuned for the first alumni gathering coming soon, and don't forget to join our group on Facebook(you don't need a school email anymore) - Denison Crew- currently we are trying to get everyone in the denison community far and wide to help us Erg 10 million meters! We are already over 100,000!

January 3, 2007 - Happy New Year - This past year has been awesome for DU CREW we have come so far in the past year but it is a result of a lot of hard work by the dedicated students of Denison Crew. this fall built nicely and ended in Chattanooga at the Head of the Hooch with our novice women's 8 placing solidly in thier race and with the Men's V4 pulling hard and in a very set boat with a brand new rower in the bow! Great job Carlin.

Keep up to date and chat with team members on Facebook! Just join the group Denison Crew - Practice starts soon and our schedule for the spring will be posted by the end of January. Make some plans to watch us take on some stiff competition.

May 9, 2006 - Well, the 2006 Spring Season has come to a close. Our Final Competition was in Charleston, WV. What a day. We may not be winning races but we always seem to make it exciting and fun.

The first race was the Womens V4 with Christiana, Kristen E., Lindsay, and Connor with Jill coxing(only Kristen is a varsity rower). At the start one side of the boat was on the square and the other side was on the feather, and oops we're in last place. Going into this race, the girls had to place first or second to make the finals. Not looking good, but as we know It is the second half of the race where we shine. The only problem is a strong current and tail wind would make this race much shorter. Not exactly what we want. Anyway, the girls got straightened out and managed to catch back up to the field. They walked through the 4th and 5th place boats in about 6 strokes, and quickly overtook the 3rd place boat as well. As they entered the last 500 still in 3rd, they shifted again ripping past the next boat in 6 more strokes leaving behind a trail of smoke(reminds me of the Cuyahoga) and securing them a place in the finals. AWESOME!!!

The next race was the Mens V4 of Brett, Mark, Matt, and Nate, with Scott weighing down the stern(this boat had 2 novices). So off the start, we were not the fastest but we held our ground. The field was tough CMU, OHIO, Xavier, and us with 3 to finals. As we held our place about 10 feet of open water behind Xavier they slowly moved into our lane. I decided to draft off of them and hope that they would move over when they were flagged, giving us a straight shot to the finish. But as we neared the 500m mark they would not move over. We were forced to take a longer course as we moved a seat a stroke on them but the finish came too soon and we were edged out by less than a second. A hesitation on my part to protest cost us a spot in the final. The worst part was that the guys weren't even that tired. I'm really sorry guys, but Xavier better be ready to row in some heavy chop this fall when we rip past them with a vengence.

The next race was the Womens V8 a mostly novice crew and 3 of the girls from the V4. We were ahead of a boat off the start but did not have what we needed to make the finals, despite an amazing effort against some fully funded varsity programs. The Finals of the WV4 were next, making 3 races in about 5 hours for most of the girls. And even the best athletes can't race like that. With a super fast heat and a crab we finished last but that put us 6th out of 15 tams that competed that day Great Job Ladies!!!

The final event was the Mixed 8 which left a bit to be desired. We beat Witt but that was all. It was a 500m dash and if we had had another 1500m we would probably have a few medals. All in all a great day of racing.

DU CREW newsletter winter 05-06

April 22, 2006 - Despite the lack of updates, a lot has been going on with DU CREW over the last few weeks. Our first race was the RedHawk Sprints hosted by Miami University on April 1st. I don't have official results but we put the fear into the eyes of many of our competitors. We threathend many teams who were expecting an easy victory over Denison. There were unconfirmed rumors floating around the race site about the huge girls rowing at Denison and their matching erg times.

The following weekend was the OSU hosted Ohio Cup. It was cancelled due to high winds so we had land practice at Bob Evans. It was an all out war between the tables, but my table won by landing the final blow, a wet soggy spit ball right between the eyes of the other tables ringleader. We then had our scheduled off weekend for Easter.

Today we traveled to Wittenberg for the Second intra-conference dual. This first was held in 2001 at Hoover. After a 5 year hiatus it's back. Wittenberg crew was a gracious host, and thanks to the hard work and fortitude of Brian Davis and Scott Ingraham the racing today was a huge success. Not to mention the hard work of Wittenberg crew members and of course the Denison rowers who arrived ready to compete. In the first race it was a tight one in the WN4 but Witt pulled out the victory by just under 3 minutes. Next was the mens 4s with DU winning by about a minute. The wind picked up considerably so we cancelled the Womens V4. Following that was the womens 8s. In a battle for the ages Witt held off a fierce final sprint by Denison to cross ahead by 11 seconds. In the final Matchup of our Bread and Butter boat the Mixed 8's, Denison commanded repecet with a 50 second victory over Witt. The best part of the day was our roundtable discussion (sounds serious) about building rowing in the NCAC conference and building this weekend as a regatta for those teams. Congratulations to both teams for a great day of racing. Next Week - West Virginia Governors Cup.

March 29, 2006 - After a great week of rowing and absurd amounts of Erging, seven members of DU Crew returned - one died from too much erging - just kidding - from Augusta GA to the Bone chilling waters of Hoover Resevoir. Augusta was a great place to train, and a special thanks to Ed Gunter for being so flexible with us during the week. DU Crew raced in the Augusta Invitational Regatta and the Men's novice 4, comprised of 3 women, passed a boat and placed 3rd in their heat! AWESOME. The Mens Varsity 4 only had one varsity rower but raced with maturity and poise although their efforts were not rewarded as well as the other boat.

Augusta Results

In other news, our First Regatta - Redhawk Sprints in Miami are this weekend, followed by the Ohio Cup next weekend on April 8th. We invite all friends, family and alumni to come down to Hoover for some great racing.

We also have a special announcement. 2nd season novice rower Christiana Glenn has been accepted into the 2006 Senior Womens Development porgram camp. Click HERE to see more info on the camp. Way to go Christiana!!!

Feb 25 2006 - Denison Crew hosts the MCES with OSU at the new RPAC facility. DU Crew showed its strenght like never before by finishing Second in the points race. We defeated Wittenberg and OU, falling only to OSU. A special thanks to DU Crew Founder and Alumni Coordinator Greg Holden '03 for stopping by to cheer on the Big Red. Please go to and click on Results to see full results. Please go to the Club History page to see how DU CREW did. Our next adventure will take us to Agusta, GA for a spring training trip. We are also selling Sweet coupons to Macy's for shopping on March 25, so contact any member of DuCrew for a coupon!

Feb. 12, 2006 - Denison Crew sent a few Athletes to the Marietta Erg Sprints on Feb, 11. Matt Kowallis brought home gold in the mens cox event. Mark Wiliams and Nathan Dailey each recorded a PR and Christiana Glenn was awarded the "Hammer" for the fastest overall women's time with a 7:28!. WAY TO GO DU CREW!!!

Jan. 20, 2006 - DU Crew has finished the Fall '06 season and is looking forward to Hosting the Midwest Championship Erg Sprints with Ohio State at their new athletics complex on Sat Feb 25. Go to RegattaCentral to sign up. Check out the Crew Calendar for the complete DU Crew schedule.
