5   There's a strange light in the sky


 
Present progressive; listening and speaking skills.

 

1. Look at the picture and listen to the commentary. There are some differences. What are they? (Useful words: top, side, square, round.)

2. How well can you remember the commentary? Complete the commentator's sentences.

  1. Everybody .......... up.
  2. The lights .......... from a strange machine.
  3. A door .......... in the top.
  4. A strange thing .......... out.
  5. They .......... green suits.
  6. Now they .......... across the field.
  7. He .......... him over to the spaceship.
  8. He .......... him inside.
  9. I .......... down to have a word with our visitors.
  10. It .......... out his gun.
  11. It .......... it at me.

3. Write the -ing forms. Examples:

work >>> working
sit >>>> sitting
lie >>>> lying
take >>> taking
wait >>> waiting
 
look   come   land   get   wear   walk       feel   pull   go   hold   point   die   rain

4. Make questions. Example:

light / where / come from?          >>> Where is the light coming from?

everybody / where / look?
machine / where / land?
door / where / open?
strange creatures / what / wear?
strange creatures / where / walk?
commentator / who / talk to?

5. Pronunciation. Listen to the recording. Do you hear A or B? Practice the difference.

A:    eat   green   sheep   field   B:    it      grin     ship      filled

Now say these words:

machine   green   field   people   believe   dream

in   picture   listen   difference   is   coming   thing   him   ship   inside   visitor   think

 

6. You are the commentator. The strange creatures have taken you away with Evans in the spaceship. You still have your portable radio transmitter, and you go on sending  messages to Earth to tell people what is happening.                             Look at the pictures below, and work with other students to prepare  a commentary. Make the commentary different from the pictures in four or five places.                       Give your commentary, and see if the class can find the differences.
