An Ode to Tokelau
June 23, 2003 - 7:40 PM - Posted By Edmund
Yo DemocKrats- There is a new comic. ALSO, If you are not yet visiting this site at its new domain name, www.democKracy.tk, do so. Nice domain, ne? .tk domain names are given completely free of charge at www.dot.tk, compliments of the nation of Tokelau. I thought since Tokelau was nice enough to supply this piss-poor webcomic with its own domain name, and it has some pretty interesting political structures, it might be worth talking about a bit here. Anyway, this is a series of islands in the Pacific Ocean (they are to the extreme left on a world map) with a population of 1500. What makes the nation interesting to me is their distinctive political/socioeconomic system of Inati. Dispensing with the bureaucratic mayhem and high-end hijinks this comic loves to mocK, Tokelauans have a simple, even Utopian system of life. The island's fishermen go out every day and bring back fish, which are divided among the inhabitants of the islands free of charge. For some reason, this affected me profoundly. In effect, this is true and absolute freedom, free from entangling "unity". Nonetheless, it's not as if it's possible anywhere else. I'm sure only its seclusion from the outside world has kept this structure in Tokelau, which will, quite sadly, vanish within the next century because of global warming. If you want to support them by getting a domain name, totally free, I encourage you to. Oh, and use this code when they ask you for the referral code or something: 32485. At any rate, that's about it for now. See you in... I guess like a month :D

Happy Labour Day Australians!

I'm tired of rants. Sorry it's been a while since the last update. I'm screwed for my AP Exam on American history this Friday! I have some stuff on the war, but it's a little late to be topical, and too early to be history yet.

I would also like to point out that our very first guest comic has arrived, courtesy of our friend over at New Traditionalists! And there a new comic.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

And here's a web comic artist that needs to find that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. My extensive summer travels are being mainly financed by me, and as a fifteen year old kid it is a pretty hefty fiscal strain. And unlike the people of America in the thirties, I'm afraid I have no FDR to fish me out with highly suspect legislation. At any rate, the great thing about my travels this summer is that they will promote democKracy! I plan on printing out several of my promo posters (which I've made better, by the way) and posting them in prominent locations I'll be visiting. These locations include Canterbury, Paris, and a million small towns like Bennington, VT. Yeah, I might alter the French ones a bit... Today's comic might look like the one I put up about a month ago, but it's not. You see, the new one is number six, you'll have to click "previous" from newest, because I thought they went a lot better in that order. Oh, and any other AP US History students out there... well, I think you feel my pain. But I am so going to rock the SAT II for American History! Also, the changes I talked about last update, which was ironically about a month ago, such as "more updates!" are still coming. I was caught in a school musical and had about as much free time as a Gilded Age factory worker. Now I'm free at last. By the way, The Maestro was also involved in the musical, maybe he'll be updating soon too! I know I hope so.... toodles, readers.

Happy Presidents' Day!
February 11, 2003 - 8:28 PM - Posted By Edmund
In honor of such a thoroughly American Historical holiday, I have prepared a comic. In fact, Presidents' Day may have brought about some more changes for democKracy. In acknowledgement of recent interest in my comic, I think there may be some changes around here. Don't worry, nothin' major, just want to make the world safe for democKracy, as my dawg Woodrow might say. Expect more frequent site updates and little repairs and such..

I had some cherry pie yesterday, it was good. I think lots of people eat cherry pie on Presidents' Day, what with the George Washington/Cherry business. At any rate, to the business. It has come to my attention recently that NO ONE KNOWS WHAT PRESIDENTS/POLITICAL FIGURES ARE ON OUR CURRENCY. Why? I really don't know. Sure, it's not often that I get the oppurtunity to see a fifty dollar bill. But you all should know that Ulysses S. Grant is the feller on it. In fact, you should all know that he was a freakin' President! Some people don't..I feel like it's my duty to educate you, so you should all know that. Study your bills, kiddies. And up with democKracy! Hopefully.

Have a Euphoric Waitangi Day!

But first, allow yourself to be educated...

Friends, perhaps you have heard of the Freemasons. They probably have a harmless-looking "temple" or "lodge" in your town with non-threatening and conservative architecture. Once a year they probably throw a pancake breakfast to show the public that they're just harmless old men. But let us refer to history. 13 of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, they tell me, were masons. George Washington was a mason. That pyramid with the eye on your national currency? It is a masonic symbol. Countless politicians including many presidents (our last was Gerald Ford) have been masons. In the early 19th century, an Antimasonic movement arose, a party claiming that the masons were manipulating American politics. Support was initiated by the publication of The Illustration of Masonry, an expose by Captain William Morgan, a former mason. I would urge you to give a good look at this book, online in its entirety. Unfortunately, the movement lost momentum when Morgan was abducted by masons and never seen again. The trial might have been able to go to court, but many of the prosecutors and such were masons, and impeded any such gathering. Suspiciously, the masons faded into the background and were pretty much never heard from again. A subtle nuance of this happening was that Morgan was taken by masons on the night of September 11, 1826. Call me crazy, but I find the masons to be a bit suspicious. Perhaps, just perhaps, I can accept the 9/11 bit as a coincidence, but the masons are still not cleared in this author's mind. And I don't want any emails from masons saying that it's all a well and good business, because you've either not been admitted to the higher circles as secrecy is undeniably prevalent in your organization, or you are simply lying. Good day!

...And A Real Horrorshow New Year
January 18, 2003 - 11:23 AM - Posted By Edmund
Don't get all bezoomny like on me for not updating, you grahzny bratchnies! My droogs and I have been busy and I was at my starry grandparents' domy besides. However, o my brothers, I have of course got a comic for you. Anyways, for Christmas I got an awful lot of the old sakar for christmas, lollies and chocolates and such. I also got me rookers on a few good books that I've been going through, and I even received from my mother a web link to the out-of-print, starry book "The Illustration of Masonry". I recommend that you give it a viddy, it can be found at...Hmm I am unable to locate the URL at this time. I'd also like to draw your attention to my friend Lauren's great bolshy guest comic. This isn't just big, it's Taft-big. I mean, it could get stuck in a bathtub!

Have Yourself A Merry Malenky Christmas...
December 24, 2002 - 11:49 AM - Posted By Edmund
Well, I reckon I should really write a rant... truth be told, I've had the comic done for ages, but I've settled into this nice holiday laze... if you know what I mean. Anyway, it's almost Christmas. Tomorrow is the anniversary of the Confederate declaration of independence. Yep.

However, I'd like to take advantage of the "rant" aspect of this rant to rant about something that I think we've ALL noticed, and has nothing to do with American history..... Why in the gay blue hell do paperback books cost so damn much!? No, I'm not talking about that copy of "The Illustration of Masonry" that costs 300 dollars, written by William Morgan that sparked the antimasonic movement of the 1800s. I'm talking about the copy of "A Clockwork Orange" that I bought for The Maestro for Christmas. Actually, I was going to buy him an old-school beat up fun sort of copy, but they didn't have any, and if they did they probably wouldn't have included the integral last chapter, as it was not included in older versions. Now they have some dumb thirteen dollar paperback (a kingly sum) that has a new-age sort of cover that's fun to stroke because it's that weird finish that we all love and like to pay an extra seven dollars for. Yeah, well, at least it shows my appreciation for his work on the site, thanks!

And thanks for anyone who happens by this site and reads. I hope to be updating more frequently. I actually have several comics stashed away.

Happy Thanksgiving...
November 28, 2002 - 10:28 PM - Posted By Edmund
Hear ye, hear ye, and Upon the Day that DemocKracy found its place of residence at last, so found the pilgrims Residence in New England, and rejoiced most Heartily with their neighbors the "Injuns", the affectionate nickname bestowed on them by the newcomers. By the way, it wasn't up earlier because it's Aaron Burr's fault...

I reckon it's a good omen to have DemocKracy launching on Thanksgiving, and I'd like to give thanks for crappy low-bandwidth hosting like Geocities. I'd also like to give thanks for The Maestro, for in truth this site would not exist without him. Like, it would be some files on my computer, y'see. Today I celebrated Thanksgiving with true historic idiosyncrasies, drinking my cider with the pride to be drinking what the Federalists called a "patriotic liquor" in their attempts to stop people from drinking whiskey during the times of the excise tax thereupon. When I stated my feelings on the matter there was naturally a momentary silence reminiscent of the respect given a senile old man, after which the feeding resumed. It was a most excellent holiday. Then I watched Harry Potter.

Many of you readers may know that I'm into video games. Naturally, video games are a staple of the web comic artist's diet, and therefore ample subject for their rants. However although I indulge in such, they won't make their way into rants, because what in the wide blue hell does that have to do with history? Nay, DemocKracy shall not review and discuss games, it will review and discuss historical figures... For instance... Some of my thoughts of the moment:

  • Andrew Jackson freaking pwnz me. His refusal to comb his hair before his portrait for the twenty dollar bill was taken is a far cooler and less deadly form of protest than Harrison's refusal to wear an overcoat to his inauguration! John Calhoun's crappy hair is just trying to imitate him.
  • Aaron Burr is funny and stupid. I mean, it's just outrageous how goofy some of Burr's escapades are. Stay tuned for more from this bag o' laughs.

I'd just love it if you would vote for this historically-inspired comic at top web comics. Click the button every time you laugh at it, mkay? After all, there are just too many 8 bit-Theater rip-offs out there, even ones on the top 150. I won't name names, but I think the more 31337 h4xx0rz out there know who i mean.... So until next time, visit Insert Coin and have a jolly holiday. Come back and check out DemocKracy soon.
