There was something I idealized about the age of two for Demmy. She was still small enough to cart around in my arms, read Peter Pan to, and basically fulfill my need for a baby. But she was old enough now to develop as a character, to show some personality, and to talk and get into mischief. It was the perfect age.
It was in this stage of her development that I made my very first sketchy comics. Of course they werent any good. They were usually single scene drawings with funny little captions at the bottom. (Most of which I lost, otherwise Id post them here.) But it never once occurred to me that I could use her in a comic strip. I thought of her as practice for when I would someday be a real mommy, and most of my drawings were idealized scenes of such warmth and love between parent and child that they could make a Hallmark card a little queasy. ^_~
The most important thing about this time period was that Demmy developed some very important personality traits. Remember, she grew and developed like all children do, slowly over time, and from infancy to childhood. In her imaginary twos she was a tomboy, always with mud, frogs, and worms in her pocket (I may draw some of these old strips in a memory type story arch later, if I get the gumption), and she was beginning to show her imagination, drawing on the walls, and insisting she was a fairy because she had wings. She once even insisted she was the blue fairy of Pinocchio! And for a while she made everyone call her by her chosen name "Hello".
