Putting Formulas for Aiming

The first thing we need to do is go over the terminology for these formulas.

AIM - The distance to the left or right of the cup you want to aim your putt after all calculations are complete

DD (Displayed Distance) - This is the distance displayed on year screen from the ball to the cup.

S (Slope) - This is the rise or fall from your ball to the cup, uphill or downhill.

TRANS (Transitions) -  These are the steps that are displayed on putting grid showing which way the ball will break. An easy way to count the transitions is to pick up ball before you putt, count the transitions, and hit the cancel button to drop ball.  When counting transitions, only count on the lines BETWEEN your ball and the cup, never count the line that your ball is resting on or the cup is resting on. Only count the steps that your ball is resting on is if there is a red or large yellow arrow under your ball. Then divide this number by 2 and add it to your formula in Trans.

 .

TD (True Distance) - This is the distance that you want to strike your putt.
TD (Uphill Putts) = DD + S/2
or
TD (Downhill Putts) = DD - S/3

With the above True Distance Formula, we have the distance you want to hit it, now for the most important part, the AIM !!!!!

N/M     S/F     H/S

Downhill
AIM* = (DD/5) +  (S/3) + TRANS
Uphill
AIM* = (DD/5) + TRANS

H/F

Downhill
AIM* = (DD/5) 3 +  (S/3) + TRANS
Uphill
AIM* = (DD/5) 3 + TRANS

H/M     N/F

Downhill
AIM* = (DD/5)2 +  (S/3) + TRANS
Uphill
AIM* = (DD/5)2 + TRANS

N/S     S/M

Downhill
AIM* =   (S/3) + TRANS
Uphill
AIM* =  TRANS

S/S

Downhill
AIM* =  (S/3) + TRANS - (DD/5)
Uphill
AIM* =  TRANS - (DD/5)

Now that you got all of this, lol, there is 1 other aspect to consider. If after all you calculations your AIM is GREATER than 36", you must ADD another 6" for every 5 ft of Displayed Distance.

EXAMPLE 1 :

I have an uphill putt that Slopes at 6" and the Displayed Distance is 20 feet on a H/F green.  I count the TRANS between my ball and the cup  and it shows that it is 15 steps left to right. Using the following formula I would do the following :
AIM* = (DD/5) 3 + TRANS
AIM = (20/5) + 15
AIM = 4 + 15
AIM = 19" to LEFT of CUP,  and by following putt chart. I would hit the ball at 1.3 clicks

EXAMPLE 2 :

I have a downhill putt that slopes at 12" and the Displayed Distance is 30 feet on N/M green. I count the TRANS between my ball and the cup and it shows that there are 24 steps right to left and that the line my ball is resting on has a red arrow also pointing right to left. This line has 8 steps on it so I take half, which is 4and add it to the 24 steps I counted earlier.
Appylng the formula for downhill putt on N/M greens I get :

AIM* = (DD/5) + (S/3) + TRANS
AIM* = (30/5) + (12/3) + 24 + 4( from 1/2 steps ball is on, red arrow)
AIM* = 6 + 4 + 24 + 4
AIM* = 38
Since the AIM is GREATER than 36, we must now ADD an extra 36" to the calculated AIM (if calculated AIM is greater than 36", then add an additional 6" for every 5' Displayed Distance)

So, with that in mind........AIM = 38 + 36
AIM = 74" to the right of the cup and by following the putt chart, I would hit the ball 2.1 clicks.

The above examples and formulas are just a little help to get you closer to the hole on those benders and breakers. You must PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE to become familiar and comfortable with the above formulas.
