The Delhi Dolphins Swim Team has begun their 2008 - 2009 season! This year, they've joined the Central Valley Swim League, which also includes teams from Amsterdam, Cooperstown, and Canajoharie. At the first meet of the season, the Central Valley League's "First Splash", the Dolphins held their own against their very competitive rivals. In the first event, the girls' medley relay team of Kayla, Stephanie, Emma and Chandler took first place against three strong opposing teams. What an inspiring start to our first meet! Later, in the 8-and-under categories, Sienna, Sarah, Alexis and Autumn represented the Dolphins in the 25 free and back events, and Alexis and Autumn also competed in the 25 breaststroke. Sarah won second place in the 7-and-under 25 free and eight-year-old Becca placed second in the 8-and- under 25 free. Becca also swam in the 10-and-under 50 breast and placed an impressive 6th against the older girls! This group swam with a lot of heart and will be fun to watch in upcoming meets! In the 10-and-under races, Brooke placed 5th in the challenging 50 fly, and Sam, Brooke, Amelie, and Susan took on highly competitive fields in the 50 back, 50 breast, and 50 free. The 11-12 races were also incredibly competitive, though Kayla and Alyssa raced solidly in the 50 fly, and Candice, Katherine E., Kayla, Tianna, Katherine R., and Amy had great showings in the 50 back. Candice, Katherine E., Alyssa, and Amy competed in the 50 breast, and Kayla, Alyssa, Tianna, Katherine E., Amy, and Katherine R. also raced in the very competitive 50 free. There is a lot of potential in this hard-working group! The 13-year-old duo of Stephanie and Emma represented the Dolphins well with 5th and 6th places in the 100 breast (where both earned B times) and the 200 IM. Steph also earned a B time and a 4th place finish in the 100 free and Emma placed 3rd and earned a B time in the 50 free. Great job girls! The boys' team had some very impressive showings. Eight-year-old Hans took home 2nd in the 25 free and also raced the challenging 25 fly and 100 IM events in his first meet! Brandon placed in every individual event he swam: the 50 back (placing 2nd and earning a B time), 50 breast (placing 4th), and 50 free (placing 4th). His fellow 12-year-old Antonio also placed in the 50 free (2nd), 50 back (6th), and 50 breast (6th). Newcomer Chet held up to the competition in the 50 back and 50 free in his first meet ever! Fifteen- year old Christian returned to swimming after a long hiatus and swam impressively against tough competitors in the 100 breast (2nd), 100 free (6th), and 50 free (2nd). This is a talented boys' field, and we expect to see some impressive performances this season! At our second meet of the season (against the Amsterdam Sea Rams and Cooperstown Crocodiles), we had many improved times and high finishes. On the boys' side, Brandon won the 50 back and 50 breast and improved his times in both (over 5 seconds in the 50 breast)! He also captured 3rd in the 50 free. Hans won both the 25 back and 25 free in blazing fashion and anchored the 9-10 free relay! On the girls' side, Autumn captured 4th in the 25 free and 6th in the 25 back. Sarah was 3rd in the 25 free and improved her time from the previous week. Sam lowered her time in the 50 back and she and fellow Dolphin Amelie captured points in the 9-10 year-old 50 back, the 50 free and 50 breast against a tough field. In the 11-12 category, Candice lowered her time in the 50 back (and placed 3rd in that event), and was 6th in the 50 breast and 5th in the 100 IM. Kayla improved in 2 events: the 50 free (5th place) and the 50 back. Katherine R. took over 2 seconds off her 50 free time from the previous week and scored some points for the team! Finally, Brooke H. swam in her first meet of the season and captured 4th place in both the 50 free and 100IM and was 5th in the 50 back. We'll surely be seeing even more impressive performances from these girls as the season progresses! The Dolphins will host their next meet on December 7th at 1pm at the SUNY Delhi Pool against the Canajoharie Crocodiles and the msterdam Sea Rams. Many of our swimmers will be looking to qualify for the Junior Olympics in March. Please come out and cheer them on! The Delhi Dolphins Swim Team is coached by John Kolodziej III of SUNY Delhi.
