The First State
Named for Delaware Bay
On August 27, 1610, Capt. Samuel Argall, sailing to Virginia, was blown from his course, into a bay. He named it for Lord de la Warr, Virginia's first Governor.
The State coat of arms is on a buff diamond
in the center of a blue field.
Below is the inscription, "December 7, 1787,"
the date of Delaware's entry into the Union.
The Seal pictures wheat, corn and an ox
signifying agriculture, and engraved on a shield:
A soldier and a farmer stand at either side.
Upon the shield's crest is a ship in full sail.

Nickname: The Blue Hen State
For Revolutionary regiments who adopted
gamecocks of this breed as mascots.

second smallest State, having only
three counties. Rhode Island is our
smallest State!
