| As you would have expected, Joy and I have started our crusade to conquer America. Although we have only been here a short time, we've managed to take in a few cities, and have made some notes (and in some cases took piccies) on what we encountered, and have left you with our thoughts below: OH - OHIO (Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton) Living in Ohio, we thought it would be rude not to make the short trip up the road from Cincinnati to the state's capital, Columbus. The city itself is fairly compact, but it does have a selection of impressive buildings Our first trip saw us take in the state's only NHL team at the Nationwide Arena, home of the Columbus Blue Jackets (which was voted the 2nd best arena in the whole of the USA - taking all sports into consideration). It is also the home of the current US College Football Champions, Ohio State Unviersity (OSU). The Buckeyes boast an impressive 100,000 seater stadium which is always sold out come game day. I have been using OSU's facilities over the last couple of months as I have been up their to play field hockey and to help them raise some funds for their field hockey program. The other city that we visited was Dayton. Dayton is the birthplace of the Wright Brothers (aviation fame). To be honest, other than an aviation museum, a military base, and the Dayton International Airport, there's not much else going on here! A good place to fly into though if you are visiting us - the fares a a lot cheaper than flying into CVG. Obviously, the majority of our Cincinnati information can be found on other pages in this website. Visted Cleveland, home of the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience - was once known as the nistake on the lake, but has since been redeveloped and it looking pretty smart! You can head to the FLATS if you want to experience the Qauyside stylee bars. KY - KENTUCKY (Covington, Newport, Louisville, Fort Knox) You can often find me in one of the bars on Mainstrasse in Covington. This place comes alive late at night - unlike drinking at home, the average American doesn't appear to turn-out until the late hours of the night (and continue to party until the early hours of the following morning). It's a different drinking culture, and I am fortunate that my drink buddy, Joe, can take the pace as we start our nights out in the early hours of the afternoon (if you know what I mean!?!). Covington is situtated on the Riverfront alongside Newport. Newport has a purpose built entertainment centre that is filled with Bars, Restaurants, and a Cinema. It's also the home of the very impressive Aquarium. We've also visited Louisville (which is America's 16th largest city), and Fort Knox. There doesn't seem to be a great deal going on in Louisville - may be it was because we visited on a Sunday??? We managed to get into Fort Knox, and drove around the military base. We did catch a glimpse of the Bullion Building (shown below). Louisville should think of re-naming it's city to Louisville University, as the city is over-run by faculty buildings and student sports complexes. There is a theme park called SIXFLAGS, but looks small when compared to our very own Paramount Kings Island (spoilt, I know!). Don't get me wrong, the city is seems okay, and does have a few attractions - including the Louisville Sluggers Baseball Museum. . . I am going to give it the benefit of my doubts as we did visit on a day where most of the US population are visiting church. IN - INDIANA (Indianapolis, Lawrenceburg) We've visited Indiana on a number of occassions - mainly to go to Perfect North Slopes (ski resort), Lawrenceburg. For information on this, please select the Local Skiing icon on the Home Page. My Dad, Bart and I visited Indianapolis whilst they were both over here from the UK. The city itself is about the size of Columbus. They host the NBA's Indiana Pacers, and the NFL's Indiana Colts - both of which have fantastic stadia built in the city centre. The rest of the city is made up of high rise buildings and war memorials. It seemed to be consistant with the other Tri-State cities regarding the relaxed atmosphere, and sheer lack of people (where do all of the folks go when we hit town - maybe they're all trying to tell me something???). I'm sure that I'll get a chance to go back and see the Indy 500 . . . IL, ILLINOIS (Chicago) DC, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA (Washington) NY, NEW YORK (New York) MA - MASSACHUSETTS (Boston) Joy recently visited Boston on a business trip. She went there as the city was hosting this years Weinstein conference. The reports I have had back lead me to believe that this is a beautiful city with a lot of history. She took some pictures for you all to see (below). NC - NORTH CAROLINA (Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Wilmington) When we visited the US last year, we took the short plane ride from Cincy to Raleigh/Durham to meet our friends Nick and Jen. The first few nights, we stayed in a posh hotel in Chapel Hill. Whilst there, we had the opportunity to visit the arena where a young Michael Jordan made his college debut for the North Carolina Tarheels (local Uni. team). Nick and Jen were great hosts - they'd organised a trip out to Wilmington for the Independence Day celebrations, and took us to a fantastic Mexican restuarant in Raleigh (where I believe that I hold some sort of Burrito eating record for one sitting!). Wilmington is located on the East Coast, and over-looks the Atlantic Ocean. It also has a very famous river run through it by the name of Cape Fear. Nick and Jen have now moved to Washington, DC, and we hope to visit them soon! FL - FLORIDA (Key West) info to follow . . . |
