| Scene 5- We see students trying to look at something that is posted. Paige and Hazel come up. Paige: Oh look! It's the candidates for the elections! Me, Michelle, Erica, Tina, Alyssa, Georgia, and Hazel. Wait. Hazel? Hazel! You are running! Hazel: Paige. I had to. Paige: Why? So you could run against me? You know how important this is to me! Hazel: This is important to me too, Paige! Jimmy: I saw that you decided to run! Good luck! (Kisses her cheek and leaves) Paige: You're doing this for him, aren't you? Hazel: I'm doing it for me, Paige! Paige: Fine. I'll win anyway. This shouldn't get in the way of our friendship. Hazel: It already has! Why do you think I ran for these elections? To be noticed! To be someone! Paige: Come one, Hazel, you know that's not true. Hazel: All I am is your friend! And now I lost that one, too! Paige: You're just jealous because I'm more popular than you! (Hazel leaves) Scene 6- We see Emma, Manny, and Toby in the dance studio. Instructor: Welcome, students. Today we have a new student, His name is Toby. Yes, he is the only boy in the class, but that is okay. But, since he joined the class late, he will only be an understudy for the recital at the end of the month. So, Toby, have you ever danced before? Toby: Uh, yeah. I did once in a talent show- I was a panther. (Everyone laughs)(Toby and Emma connect eyes and smile) Instructor: Thank you, Toby. Now, we are going to start with a warm up. Toby follow the best you can. (We watch a series of warm ups. Toby is very uncoordinated and can't do anything. He bumps into things, does weird stuff, and gets tired easily) Toby: (to Emma) Is it always this hard? Emma: You had a bad day, you'll catch on! Toby: Yeah right! Instructor: Class, before you go, take a handout on the recital and I will see you tomorrow. Toby, can I see you after everybody leaves? (the room fills with talking as Toby walks up to the instructor) Toby: Yes? Instructor: Toby, I don't think this class is right for you. Toby: What? But this means the world to me! Instructor: I know it does. I know your type. I've had so many boys take this class, not a single one has made it. Toby: But I want to make it! I like to Dance! (you can see JT at the door, listening. When he hears this, he becomes sad and walks in) JT: Miss, miss, Instructor: Abigail! JT: Miss Abigail, my friend, Toby, really wants to dance. Can you give him private lessons; start him at a lower level? Instructor: Toby's friend, JT: JT Instructor: JT, this is a very complicated dance recital and we need the best. Toby: You said I would only be an understudy. Instructor: Even that is asking for a lot. But. I will tell you what. I will start a new class for you- an all boy class. Toby: Great. Instructor: But you will need to recruit more boys. I can't waste time teaching only one kid. Toby: JT can do it. JT: What? Instructor: Do you have any dance experience? Were you a panther, too? JT: No, I was not a panther and I am not a dancer. I can't do that. Instructor: Sorry, Toby, but I will have to cut you. (Toby sighs and starts to walk off) JT: Fine! I'll do it! But no tutu! Toby: Thanks JT! Instructor: Great! Come an hour early tomorrow. You will both be understudies in the main dances but maybe I can add in a special "guys only" dance for you. Scene 7- We see grade 12 in a classroom. Teacher: Now pair up with your partner from yesterday and begin the assignment. (the class in filled with confusion and Hazel wearily walks over to Paige) Hazel: I'm sorry, Paige. (Paige pretends not to hear) I'm sorry for what I did and said. I shouldn't have been such an attention hog. Paige: I'm sorry, too, Hazel. I shouldn't take you for granted. What do you say you come over after school? We can watch movies and do our nails! Hazel: Great. I'd love to. Paige: Sweetness. Hazel: And Paige… I'm dropping out of the election. I just did it to be noticed and that was stupid. Paige: Thanks, Hazel. Scene 8- We see JT, Toby, Manny, and Emma walking down the hall. Emma: JT? In the class? In the recital? JT: I'm doing it for Toby. Ok? (they turn into Mr. Simpson's classroom and sit at the computers) Mr. Simpson: Ok. To finish off our art unit, we are taking two field trips to experience different types of art. We will begin at the art museum and then go to a Lyrical Dance School Recital at Miss Abigail's Dance Studio downtown where my daughter, Emma takes dance class. (Emma, Manny, JT, and Toby exchange nervous looks.)(Emma raises her hand) Emma: I think we should skip that part of the trip. Mr. Simpson: Emma, it was your idea. You said it would be good if the class experienced different kinds of art- not just that on a canvas. Emma: I know and it is a great idea, but we would, uh, uh…..take away time from the art museum. Mr. Simpson: Let's take a vote. All those in favor of skipping the dance recital raise your hand. (Only Toby, JT, Manny, and Emma raise their hand.) Sorry, Em, but the field trip is on. Scene 9- We see Hazel and Paige waiting for their nails to dry. Paige: The whole thing is pretty silly. Hazel: Yeah. I can't imagine how it all ruined our friendship! Paige: Yeah. I mean, is it really a big deal? Hazel: No way. Paige: Besides, I think we both know who will win. Hazel: (sighing)Yeah. Both: Me. Paige: What? Hazel: You? Paige: Hazel. Don't be silly. Of course I will win. Hazel: Not if I was still running! (Paige laughs as if that were suppose to be a joke, but Hazel doesn't.) Paige: You are just too funny, Hazel! Hazel: (obviously mad) I'm going to the bathroom. (she gets up and we follow her to the bathroom. After she shuts the door she sees a bottle of "Liquid Instant hair remover" and Paige's shampoo. She takes off the lid of the shampoo and empties its contents. She then puts the hair remover into the empty bottle and puts the lid back on. She flushed to toilet and leaves.) Scene 10- We see Emma on the phone. Emma: I'm sorry, JT, but we can't cancel the trip. (pause) It won't be that humiliating! (pause) Fine! Bye! (hangs up) Mr. Simpson: (entering) Who was that? Emma: JT. Mr. Simpson: What did he have to say? Emma: Just telling me how I ruined his life! Mr. Simpson: You mean.. Emma: He's in the recital, too. And Toby. They were dragged into it. Mr. Simpson: Is this why you don't want the class to go? Emma: Yes! Mr. Simpson: I'm really sorry, Emma, but the permission slips are out. We're going. Emma: Fine. I guess it isn't that bad. I mean, JT and Toby are just understudies. Well, except for their one dance, but I'm sure Miss Abigail can take it out if they are too humiliated to go through with this. |
