i have been in love with music for as long as i can remember. when i was young, i used to listen to the radio and know the words to every song that was played. i'm not sure what it is about music in general that intrigues me. however, it does. maybe it is the music's ability to work in me and create the powerful emotions that it does so well. maybe its that spark of creativity that it produces inside me, which in turn, causes me to produce. who knows? as for particular artists/groups/bands, back in the day, if it was popular, i liked it. i like to think my naivety has ceased for the most part and that i don't just follow the crowd with my musical tastes anymore. it takes a lot more for me to accept an artist as an actual artist nowadays and it takes a lot for an artist to prove to me their talents. i'm a tough judge when it comes to my music. however, the following artists and/or labels have proven to me that they are about real music and not just capitalizing on the clueless masses. so, without further ado...
words can't express the impact that hip-hop has had on my life. hip-hop is more than just another genre of music. its become a lifestyle. and to some, its become the only lifestyle. as is the case with myself. i could go on and on about how much hip-hop means to me and the positive aspects of the culture, but it would consume more space and time than i have available. however, i will say that hip-hop has done more for me and positively influenced me more than any other factor in my life to date. most hip-hop music these days isn't really hip-hop though. most of it is meaningless trash with no feeling or emotion whatsoever disguised as hip-hop. its sad but over the past three or four years, this is what hip-hop has been transforming into. very few artists still bring it from the heart. instead, they bring it straight from the bankroll in their pocket. you can only put so much of the blame on the artists though. the rest must be distributed among the mindless listeners buying more and more of the trash every day. its almost as if the more meaningless the music becomes, the more people enjoy it. sadly, i have been known to fall victim to this plague on more than one occasion. sometimes, hip-hop music is meant to be meaningless, and that's fine. but when the real hip-hop cats fall into the minority, i feel there is a problem. i just have trouble fucking with cats like master p. and p. diddy any more when i remember how real they used to be and their shit wasn't all about glamour and glitz. its even more difficult for me to watch cats like master p. and p. diddy selling millions upon millions of records while real emcees like evidence, iriscience, mos def, talib kweli, and dead prez have been in the game for years serving up nothing less than hot shit and still can't get the recognition they deserve. but what can i do? i'm only one person. maybe one day someone, perhaps me, will make it up in this bitch of an industry and change all that. a back-packer can dream, right?
i've linked one website below that i feel does justice to its artists, besides being a hot website. enjoy.
other hip-hop artists i indulge in are eminem, redman & method man, nas, jay-z, wu-tang clan circa nineteen ninety-seven and earlier, the beatnuts, dilated peoples, dead prez, mos def, xzibit, the liks, busta rhymes, tony touch (and numerous other mixtapes), the notorious b.i.g., tupac shakur, kurupt, outkast, mudkids, cru, people under the stairs, jurassic 5, butterfly toungz, a tribe called quest, and a few others from time to time.
